Survey Reveals Workers Would Prefer Unpleasant Tasks Over Bad Office Environments
A new survey conducted by The Harris Poll for National Business Furniture has unveiled surprising insights into employee satisfaction regarding workplace environments. The findings show that a staggering 76% of on-site employees would rather engage in unpleasant activities than work in poorly designed workspaces. From doing taxes to enduring cramped spaces on a long flight, employees expressed a strong dislike for poorly catered office designs. This reveals a pressing need for companies to rethink their office environments.
Key Findings of the Survey
According to the survey, one in four on-site employees stated they would rather do their taxes than manage a bad workspace. Specifically, 24% of respondents favored this choice over the discomfort of working in an inefficient office layout. Additionally, 25% would rather deal with being stuck in a middle airplane seat for a protracted six hours, and 28% would tolerate a lengthy wait on hold with customer service to avoid being in an uncomfortable work setting.
“Employees are sending a clear message that their office conditions directly affect their work experience,” said Yonca Heyse, President of National Business Furniture. “When they are unable to focus, feel physically uncomfortable, or lack an adequately supportive work environment, it impacts not just productivity, but how valued they perceive themselves in the workplace.”
The study also highlights that nearly three-quarters, specifically 73%, of employees, reported frustrations with their current workspace. This dissatisfaction is prevalent across age demographics, with over half of the workforce aged 55 and older expressing discontent, and nearly 80% of younger employees aged 18-54 sharing similar sentiments.
Impact on Employee Experience
These frustrations are taking a toll on employee morale and productivity. More than half (57%) of employees stated that they occasionally struggle to concentrate on their tasks, while 52% reported that meeting spaces do not meet their needs at least sometimes. This lack of satisfaction could lead to decreased employee engagement and productivity.
Notably, 83% of on-site employees who have voiced frustrations regarding their workspace believe they would feel significantly more valued by their employer if these concerns were adequately addressed. This sense of appreciation is particularly strong among nearly 39% of respondents who feel this way very intensely.
Furthermore, hybrid employees showing dissatisfaction with their workspace indicated that 77% would be more inclined to work on-site if improvements were made to their environments.
Conclusion
“Frustration regarding physical workspaces spans across generations and has a tangible impact on daily operations,” Heyse noted. “It’s imperative for employers to prioritize improvements in office design for their employees.”
