Japan's New Micro-Mobility Association Aims to Solve Transportation Challenges

Launch of the Japan Micro-Mobility Association

The newly formed Japan Micro-Mobility Association has recently taken flight, seeking to pave the way for enhanced electric micro-mobility solutions across the nation. This transformation of the previously named Micro-Mobility Promotion Council aims to address pressing transportation challenges in Japan. Leading the charge is Chairman Yusuke Kanda, a professor from Kure National College of Technology, whose expertise positions him well to oversee this vital initiative.

This collaborative effort brings together key players in the micro-mobility sector, including renowned companies such as Luup, BRJ, and Lime. Notably, the association has expanded its membership to include major bike-sharing firms and prominent insurance companies that strive to foster the safe and reliable integration of electric micro-mobility into daily life in Japan.

A Rising Force in Urban Mobility

Founded in 2019, the Micro-Mobility Promotion Council primarily consisted of electric micro-mobility sharing operators. Over the years, it has advocated for self-regulatory frameworks while promoting the benefits of electric micro-mobility as safe transportation solutions through demonstration experiments and business ventures. Though significant progress has been made since the amendment of relevant laws two years ago, the rise in popularity has also introduced various challenges. Consequently, the Japan Micro-Mobility Association is committed to building on previous efforts to enhance its initiatives further.

The association seeks to unite businesses involved in electric micro-mobility, insurance firms, and helmet manufacturers to propel the safe and secure proliferation of such vehicles. The cooperation reinforces the reliability of these modes while also fostering healthy industry development and contributing to local community vitality through improved transit solutions.

However, he also acknowledged existing issues, such as user etiquette and safety concerns, which have emerged alongside the advent of these new transportation modes.

With a commitment to providing accurate information and fostering responsible use, the association aspires to expand the presence of micro-mobility within society responsibly while tackling broader social issues.
