David Steiner Appointed as the 76th Postmaster General of the USPS
David Steiner Takes Charge of the USPS
On May 9, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors announced the appointment of David Steiner as the 76th Postmaster General and CEO of the organization. This decision comes on the heels of the resignation of former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in March, and current Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino will resume his role as Deputy Postmaster General and Chief Human Resources Officer. Pending successful completion of background and ethics checks, Steiner is expected to officially join the USPS in July.
Amber McReynolds, chair of the Postal Service Board of Governors, expressed confidence in Steiner's leadership abilities, stating, "Dave is the right person to lead the Postal Service at this time to ensure this magnificent and historic organization thrives into the future." This view hinges on Steiner’s extensive experience and vision that align with the postal service's mission.
Steiner himself acknowledged the honor of leading such a storied institution, stating, "It is an incredible honor to be asked to lead the world’s greatest postal organization, with a history that stretches back before the founding of the United States." He expressed a commitment to engaging with USPS employees, emphasizing the importance of creating a world-class employment experience while also collaborating with unions and management associations.
David Steiner joins the USPS with a wealth of experience, having served as the President and CEO of Waste Management for 12 years. During his tenure, he successfully transformed the company, establishing new business lines and enhancing its operational efficiency, which solidified its status as the leading provider of waste management and recycling services in North America. His previous roles at Waste Management included Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, among others.
In addition to his corporate experience, Steiner has also held board positions at numerous organizations. Currently, he serves on the boards of FedEx Corporation and Vulcan Materials. He intends to manage these commitments while transitioning to his role at the USPS. Steiner's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Louisiana State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
The selection of the Postmaster General is solely under the purview of the Presidentially appointed and Senate-confirmed Governors of the USPS Board of Governors. They oversee the Postal Service as an independent entity within the executive branch. To facilitate this search, the Board consulted with global leadership advisory firm, Egon Zehnder.
As a vital federal establishment, the USPS prides itself on self-financing and providing services to every American community. The organization is currently engaged in a 10-year transformation plan titled "Delivering for America," aimed at modernizing the postal network to ensure long-term financial sustainability and improved service across all mail and shipping categories. This ambitious initiative underscores the USPS's commitment to maintaining its status as a trusted brand while meeting the evolving needs of its customers.
In conclusion, as David Steiner prepares to take the reins, there is a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the USPS's future. With a focus on enhancing service and sustainability, Steiner's leadership will be pivotal in navigating the challenges ahead and in fostering a revitalized Postal Service that continues to serve the American public with efficiency and integrity.
