Creating Fascinating Instruments from Scrap: Join the Pekker Workshop in Edogawa!

Create Unique Instruments from Scrap Material

A very special event is set to take place on May 18, 2025, at the Edogawa Cultural Center's conference room. It's called the Pekker Workshop, where participants will have the opportunity to create fascinating instruments from what would otherwise be considered junk! Under the guidance of the renowned instructor “Tomotomo,” also known as Tomoyuki Yamaguchi, attendees will craft and perform with various recycled instruments, starting with a maraca-like instrument called the Pekker, made from pet bottles filled with personal treasures.

A Fun Dive into Sustainability

This workshop isn't just about making music; it's connected to the principles of sustainability and the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). It challenges the conventional notion of music being a highbrow art form reserved for professionals. Music can be made from materials readily available in our daily lives. This event invites you to see and hear what lies beyond the mundane sounds we often overlook. Even sounds you may perceive as noise could turn out to be surprisingly interesting when approached with an open mind.

Unlike traditional instruments that produce fixed notes, the sounds from recycled percussive instruments allow for freedom of expression; there are no 'wrong' sounds. This freedom can transform everyday objects into unique, beautiful instruments that resonate with individual creativity.

Meet Your Instructor: Tomotomo

Tomoyuki Yamaguchi, known affectionately as “Tomotomo,” is a creative force committed to breathing new life into discarded materials. He spends his days collecting and repurposing items that can produce sound, transforming them into instruments. Previously featured on the NHK educational program “Doremi no Television” as the “Taiko Brother,” Tomotomo believes that music can be created without the ability to read sheet music. He is on a mission to reveal the accessibility and origins of music through the playful drumming of unwanted items.
