Transforming Brazil's Energy Grid: The Advent of 450MHz LTE Technology

Revolutionizing Brazil's Power Supply with LTE Technology

Every day, millions of Brazilians power their lives at the touch of a button: computers boot up, manufacturing equipment runs, and electricity flows seamlessly through homes and businesses. But behind this simplicity lies a complex demand for power that has evolved considerably over time. Advancements in technology, shifts in consumption patterns, and new quality standards are now essential in meeting Brazil's growing energy needs. Thus, the core requirement for any economic growth remains: accessible, continuous, and efficient energy.

The Brazilian energy sector is one of the largest and most intricate globally, comprising approximately 90 million consumption points and over 700,000 kilometers of distribution networks. This infrastructure must remain operational at all times. In response to these increasing demands, Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG), one of the largest integrated energy companies in Brazil, has initiated a significant digital transformation effort.

Sandro Bernardes, Project Manager for CEMIG's Network and Telecommunications Infrastructure, highlighted, "CEMIG operates in generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialization of electricity, servicing 774 municipalities across the state of Minas Gerais. We deliver quality and safe electricity to over 9 million customers from urban centers to rural areas, encompassing various sectors from industries to agribusiness. To achieve this level of service, we are implementing the largest investment program in our history, doubling the number of substations, expanding capacity, and modernizing our operations. However, we encountered limitations in supporting this expansion amidst existing telecommunication solutions."

CEMIG's challenge was to upgrade its telecommunications infrastructure to keep pace with its growth ambitions. The company sought a strategic partner to support this objective and selected Huawei as the most viable option after an open tender process. Huawei's eLTE Private Network Solution will allow CEMIG to operate a high-performance telecommunications network throughout the entire Minas Gerais state, managed centrally from dispatch centers.

Bernardes noted, "This partnership goes beyond technology for CEMIG; it represents effective capital allocation with optimal cost and profit ratios while ensuring asset modernization. A reliable telecommunications system is crucial for secure operations and automation, paving the way for the next phase in the energy sector with private networks like LTE."

After evaluating both internal and external research, CEMIG chose the 450 MHz frequency band, compliant with 3GPP standards, which offers a robust end-to-end ecosystem. This frequency supports extensive coverage, facilitates a large number of connections, and boasts reliability and economic efficiency. The adoption of this technology aligns with global trends within the energy sector, with Huawei emerging as a leading provider of energy solutions.

With the introduction of the 450 MHz LTE technology, CEMIG is poised to enhance the safety, quality, and resilience of energy supply in Minas Gerais. This evolution signifies a substantial leap forward for the region's power infrastructure, positioning Brazil as a frontrunner in energy innovation and sustainable practices. The strategic implementation of this technology will not only improve service delivery but also ensure that the energy requirements of both urban and rural populations are effectively met in the coming years.
