Tackling Food Waste and Child Poverty with Steanas



In a unique initiative spearheaded by the Sustainable Food Chain Association (SFA), the Steanas food matching platform was put to the test to combat two pressing social issues: food waste and child poverty. Partnering with Nessu Inc., Life Corporation, and Tokyu Store, this project aimed to bridge the gap between surplus food from supermarkets and families in need.

What is Steanas?


Steanas is designed to connect perishable food items that cannot be sold in supermarkets to consumers in real-time. This includes single-parent families, scholarship-receiving students, and organizations like children's food aid programs. The platform allows these groups to access food that would otherwise go to waste, all while ensuring they can do so at a reduced cost.

The pilot program ran from October 6 to November 30, 2025, and was part of a model project by the Ministry of the Environment aimed at reducing food waste associated with consumer behavior.

Key Features of Steanas


  • - Participating Supermarkets: The project involved select stores from Life Corporation and Tokyu Store in Tokyo.
  • - Discounted Pricing: Food items were offered at 60-75% off regular prices. Additionally, those able to present proof of receiving child support or scholarships could enjoy an extra 50% discount under a special pricing scheme aimed at supporting those in need.
  • - Diverse Food Offerings: The platform provided a range of perishable items including fruits, vegetables, and baked goods, reducing the burden on families to acquire nutritious food.

Results of the Pilot Program


Over the course of the pilot, 428 registered users were recorded, with 82 making purchases. The results highlighted a 42% matching rate for food items listed on the platform. Categories like in-store bakery goods (86%) and processed meats (66%) showed particularly high matching rates.

Notably, the Life Corporation store in Nishikamata achieved a staggering 77.9% matching rate during the final week of the pilot. It’s believed that the local demographics, unique product offerings, and visible placement of items contributed to this success.

Impact Stories from Users


The project’s impact was not just quantitative but also deeply personal, with users sharing their experiences:
  • - Families were thrilled to access items like fish, organic vegetables, and fruits that were previously too expensive, which delighted the children who exclaimed, “Delicious!”.
  • - The affordability allowed parents to enhance their meals, leading to more nutritious dinners, as unused funds could now go towards acquiring healthier food options.
  • - Receiving fresh produce allowed families to spend enjoyable moments cooking together, with children experimenting with dressings.
  • - Participants noted a significant reduction in time spent shopping, providing more quality time between parents and children.
  • - With Steanas making it affordable to prepare multiple dishes, families reported greater satisfaction and joy.
  • - Many found they could now consistently provide breakfast options, improving morning routines significantly.

Moving Forward


As the pilot project concludes, the SFA continues to advocate for initiatives that address food inequities in society. With multiple outcomes from the pilot illuminating the stark reality of food waste alongside child poverty, there’s a clear commitment towards creating sustainable solutions.
