Shion Takano's New Exhibition 'Whispers' to Open in Asakusa in July 2025

Upcoming Exhibition: 'Whispers'

GALLERY ROOM A in Asakusa is set to host Shion Takano’s new solo exhibition, 'Whispers', starting July 19, 2025. Organized by The Chain Museum, the exhibition will be exclusively showcasing Takano's latest works, all of which will be available for purchase only through ArtSticker. The sales for the artworks will begin at 8:00 AM on the opening day and will follow a first-come, first-served basis.

Shion Takano is renowned for creating paintings that delve into the essence of the medium through symbolic and sensual representations of figures that float between depiction and material, structure and inner self. Her recent works show a profound influence from glam rock and Japan's visual-kei culture, which is reflected in their androgynous aesthetics and theatrical physicality. Takano continually explores the application of decorative and illusory elements found within these influences while striving to portray contemporary figures within her paintings.

The thematic focal point of 'Whispers' revolves around the concept of a ‘fence,’ an entity that captured Takano's attention upon her first visit to the exhibition space. Symbolizing both barriers and openings, the fence presents a dichotomy that brings viewers into a forbidden realm—one filled with buried impulses and desires, akin to an unconscious forest. Takano pours her emotion and tension into this series, inviting the audience to encounter the contours of her artistic expression through the tension between the fictitious and the inner self.

Artistic Reflection

In her exhibition statement, Takano expresses how the fence left a lasting impression on her. Its structure, which appears to obstruct while simultaneously inviting, provoked her imagination. She questioned what kinds of paintings could be inspired by this space. Recent inspirations from the ominous imagery of a ‘beast hiding in the depths of a forest’ reverberate as she contemplates this shady area—a mysterious, dark paradise beyond the fence. These musings led her to create works that convey the allure of being quietly drawn into the unknown, akin to being called into the depths of something unfathomable.

Artist Background

Shion Takano, born in 2001 in Fukushima, is a graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts, where she majored in painting. Her exhibitions have gained recognition, including her most recent solo exhibition ‘Painting – Nuri Kasaneru’ at roidworksgallery in Tokyo. She has also been featured in various group exhibitions and media, demonstrating her rising prominence in the art world.

For viewers attending the exhibition, they will experience Takano's exploration of the blurred lines and uncertain contours of contemporary figures emerging from the interplay of decoration and interiority. A phenomenon that is both alluring and provocative will surely emerge from her works as they tackle themes of loneliness, conflict, and the ambiguity of identity in today’s society.
