On August 2, 2026, the first phase of the largest wind farm cluster in South Africa, the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm, commenced its commercial operations. Developed by Seriti Green and featuring cutting-edge technology from Goldwind, the wind farm integrates 25 advanced GWH182-6.2 MW turbines, boasting a total capacity of 155 MW. What sets this project apart is its notable rotor diameter of 183.5 meters, the largest among all operational wind projects in the country. This impressive engineering feat demonstrates both innovation and adaptability in achieving renewable energy goals.

The commissioning ceremony was a celebration of collaboration, attended by dignitaries including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Chinese Ambassador, Wu Peng. The event highlighted the importance of international partnerships in driving South Africa's clean energy initiatives. President Ramaphosa emphasized the project's significance in meeting both local and international sustainability commitments, steering the nation towards a low-carbon future.

The Ummbila Wind Farm is not just a single project but part of a broader integrated renewable energy hub designed to encompass 750 MW of wind power, 150 MW of solar capacity, and a system capable of storing 800 MWh of energy. As the first phase concludes, the planning and construction for subsequent phases are underway, aiming for full completion by 2027, establishing the project as a cornerstone of South Africa’s clean energy transition.

During the ceremony, various leaders, including Peter Venn of Seriti Green, acknowledged the critical role Goldwind has played in the success of the Ummbila project. Venn expressed a desire to continue this productive partnership, which has thrived on mutual trust and shared goals. Additionally, both Goldwind and Seriti Green signed an agreement for a Phase 4 collaboration, solidifying their commitment to long-term strategic integration.

Goldwind’s Deputy Chairman and President, Cao Zhigang, reflected on the success of the project, attributing its efficiency and timely completion to the collaborative spirit between all stakeholders. He stated that the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm does not merely represent renewable energy generation, but a comprehensive approach to community development, infrastructure investment, and job creation.

Significantly, the project created over 1,200 jobs during its construction phase, with peak employment projected to reach 2,000 across the entire cluster. Annually, the wind farm is expected to generate approximately 480,000 MWh of energy, sufficient to power around 500,000 South African households while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 400,000 tonnes each year. Furthermore, the initiative offers viable pathways for local workers transitioning from the coal industry, emphasizing the project’s role in enhancing regional economic stability.

Understanding the unique environmental conditions of Mpumalanga Province, Goldwind engineered the turbines for high-altitude winds and frequent thunderstorms. The turbines come equipped with an intelligent control platform that monitors equipment health, adapts to loads, and enhances grid compatibility, ensuring reliable service despite local weather challenges.

Since its entry into the African market in 2010, Goldwind has committed to localized operations and training, recently establishing a SCADA monitoring center and a spare parts hub to support ongoing operations. Their continued investment reflects a deep understanding of the region’s energy needs and a commitment to fostering local talent in the renewable sector.

As South Africa forges ahead with the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm and similar initiatives, Goldwind's established footprint in the country is set to expand to over 2.2 GW of installed capacity by the second quarter of 2027.
