Duni Group's Proactive Shift to PFAS-Free Packaging Ahead of EU Regulations

In a significant move towards sustainability and public health safety, Duni Group has made the strategic decision to phase out PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from its packaging products well ahead of new EU regulations set to come into effect. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which introduces stringent restrictions on harmful substances in food contact materials, will begin to apply from August 12, 2026. Recognizing the imminent changes and the importance of consumer safety, Duni Group acted early, with its transition initiated back in 2023.

The Driving Forces Behind the Change

Duni Group's decision to eliminate PFAS stems from both increased public awareness regarding the potential health risks associated with these chemicals and a commitment to sustainability. Erik Lindroth, the company's Sustainability Director, emphasized the importance of being proactive: "Our starting point at Duni Group is to identify risks and opportunities early and act on what is relevant. We want to stay one step ahead, before legal requirements come into force."

By prioritizing early compliance, Duni Group has had the luxury of time to experiment with various alternative materials. This foresight not only ensures adherence to upcoming regulations but also positions the company as a leader in sustainable packaging solutions. Lindroth highlights that acting preemptively allows for a more integrated transition that is both efficient and effective.

Innovating Product Offerings

Historically, PFAS have been used in food packaging materials to repel moisture, grease, and other liquids. However, Duni Group's early phase-out has allowed the company to explore various alternative materials while maintaining product functionality and customer satisfaction. The company has been able to innovate and test different non-PFAS solutions, ensuring that their products still meet the rigorous performance standards required for food packaging.

Matilda Pettersson, Category Manager for Boxes and Bowls, explains the company's expanded product offerings. "We can now provide our entire packaging assortment without added PFAS. Additionally, for products made from sugarcane fiber, we've developed two distinct variants—one with lamination for higher performance and one without for less demanding applications. This approach allows us to cater to diverse customer needs effectively."

Clear Communication and Brand Safety

A noteworthy aspect of Duni Group’s strategy is its approach to terminology related to PFAS. Given the pervasive nature of these substances in the environment, the term
