Huawei's Ambitious Vision for a Smarter Future



At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 held in Barcelona, Yang Chaobin, the CEO of Huawei's ICT Business Group, delivered an impactful keynote speech urging the telecommunications sector to fasten its efforts in enabling universal access to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. He highlighted the importance of evolving network capacities to fully leverage the benefits of 5G-Advanced while emphasizing the role of connectivity in bridging the digital divide, especially in underdeveloped regions.

Yang's address reflects the rapidly advancing digital landscape where AI applications are becoming increasingly commonplace, proposing an urgent call for the industry to unite in realizing the full potential of 5G-A. He articulated, “The intelligent era is swiftly approaching. With new AI applications emerging every day, it’s paramount for the sector to capitalize on the capabilities of 5G-A.” His call to action is backed by the statistics showing a staggering increase in the consumption of AI-related tokens which has soared by 300 times over the past two years, a clear indicator of the burgeoning demand for mobile AI services.

In addressing the challenges faced by the industry, Yang pointed out several critical areas needing focus. Primarily, he urged that networks should expand their focus beyond just downlink capacity and instead provide ultra-high bandwidth for both uplink and downlink to support seamless multimodal data exchanges crucial for AI functionality. Moreover, ensuring secure, reliable, and ultra-low latency connections is essential for enabling real-time AI collaboration and intelligent decision-making.

As the industry transitions towards 6G, Yang noted that the groundwork is already being laid with ongoing standardization efforts led by the 3GPP, which is not expected to finalize standards before March 2029. He emphasized that the next five years present a unique opportunity to usher in significant advancements in mobile AI services, contingent on effective investments in 5G-A. This transitional phase is critical, as it currently empowers devoid of specifications that deliver tenfold uplink speeds and enhanced AI service experiences.

The deployment of 5G-A globally has reached more than 300 cities, signifying its substantial integration across various frequency bands. Yet, to harness greater potential from this network, there is a pressing need for innovative spectrum resources, particularly in regions where C-band allocations remain limited. The U6 GHz band, designated as a vital segment for future mobile communications, is crucial for the expansive utilization of 5G-A.

Yang further lamented the global discrepancies in digital accessibility, citing that over 300 million people still lack access to mobile broadband. Despite two decades of efforts by the telecommunications industry to narrow this digital gap, the exponential growth of AI technologies has exacerbated these inequalities. This scenario necessitates vigorous initiatives for digital inclusion alongside continuous innovations. Yang also proposed exploring inclusive connectivity strategies that amalgamate various frequency bands and cost-effective solutions.

Huawei itself has launched innovative solutions like RuralStar to provide inclusive mobile access to 170 million people across 80 nations, in addition to several other inclusion-focused programs. These initiatives include DigiTruck classrooms facilitating digital education for students in rural Kenya, inclusive financial services for rural populations in Bangladesh, and mobile health services tailored for villages in Argentina.

In conclusion, Yang called for an intensified collaborative effort in the widespread commercial rollout of 5G-A to address the urgent requirements of emerging AI services and lay the foundation for a seamless evolution towards 6G. The MWC 2026, scheduled from March 2 to 5, showcases Huawei's latest advancements and solutions, epitomizing the commitment to an AI-driven smart future. With the evolution of agent networks gaining momentum, Huawei is actively partnering with global operators to maximize the potential of 5G-A while preparing for the eventual transition to 6G.
