Nordic Semiconductor Reinforces Leadership in Cellular IoT with Major Product Launches at MWC 2026

Nordic Semiconductor Reinforces Leadership in Cellular IoT at MWC 2026

During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 held in Barcelona, Nordic Semiconductor made headlines with the launch of several groundbreaking products in the cellular Internet of Things (IoT) space. This development further solidifies their status as a leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions. CEO Vegard Wollan emphasized the company's commitment to providing developers with the most secure, energy-efficient, and scalable connectivity platforms for billions of connected devices worldwide.

Key Product Launches and Innovations

Nordic's latest offerings significantly enhance their existing portfolio built around the nRF91 series, introducing the highly anticipated nRF92 and nRF93 series. These innovations are designed to cater to evolving global connectivity needs, particularly as terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTN) evolve.

Introducing the nRF92 Series

The nRF92 series is described as a revolutionary step in cellular technology, incorporating advanced features such as a high-performance application microcontroller and low-power Edge AI capabilities via Nordic's Axon neural processing units (NPU). This series also includes a multi-constellation GNSS receiver, Wi-Fi location capabilities, and sensor data co-processing.

These features enable a range of new applications from smart metering, asset tracking, connected tags, to industrial sensors, which boast multi-year battery life. Nordic plans to make samples available to eligible customers soon, with full market availability expected in early 2027.

Launch of the nRF93 Series

The nRF93M1 modules promise to deliver enhanced data rates (10 Mbit/s downlink and 5 Mbit/s uplink), exceptional performance, and global LTE compatibility, all while maintaining Nordic's signature low power consumption and compact design. These modules are optimized for various applications such as asset tracking, gateways, fleet management systems, security devices, smart meters, and consumer products. The integration within nRF Cloud offers services such as FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air), observability, remote debugging, and location tracking, further streamlining product development. General availability is slated for mid-2026, with eligible customers already working on product development.

Enhancements to the nRF91 Module

The nRF91 module continues to lead in LTE-M/NB-IoT solutions, now featuring NTN satellite connectivity for both GEO and LEO orbits, essential for sectors like logistics, smart agriculture, and energy. Additionally, the new nRF9151 module incorporates a sub-GHz fallback mode to maintain connectivity during public network outages. Designed for clients seeking an easy and rapid cellular connectivity integration, this module supports traditional host modem architectures with a well-defined low-power modem stack and secure cloud integration.

Future 5G Integration

Nordic Semiconductor is actively collaborating with eligible clients on new 5G eRedCap technologies, further broadening the spectrum of applications available for future devices. This long-term strategy highlights Nordic's initiative in delivering low-power cellular solutions for the entire range of IoT use cases.

Implications for Developers and the Industry

This product extension marks a significant milestone in Nordic's long-term strategy, highlighting a clear roadmap for developers as they navigate the evolving landscape of connectivity technologies. With expanded clarity and confidence, developers will be well-equipped to address varying network demands and leverage new opportunities in the IoT ecosystem.
