Japan-ASEAN Center Receives Friendship Medal from Laos PDR in a Historic Recognition

Japan-ASEAN Center Awarded Friendship Medal by Laos

In a significant recognition of its contributions, the Japan-ASEAN Center, located in Minato, Tokyo, has received the Friendship Medal from the government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The medal was awarded by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on October 13, 2025, in acknowledgment of the Center's remarkable efforts to enhance friendly relations and cooperation between Laos and Japan.

2025 marks a milestone for both nations, celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of volunteer deployments from Japan to Laos. In light of these significant anniversaries, the Lao government initiated a commendation process, awarding the Friendship Medal to individuals and organizations that have notably contributed to the development of friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries. The Japan-ASEAN Center was honored to be selected as one of the receiving organizations for this prestigious award.

The awarding ceremony took place on March 24, 2026, at the Embassy of Laos in Japan, where the Center was officially presented with the medal by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, His Excellency Ampai Kinda-Vong.

Throughout its history, the Center has collaborated closely with both the Lao and Japanese governments, as well as various Japanese companies and organizations. Its initiatives have included high-level dialogues focusing on skills development, investment promotion, and industrial cooperation, all aimed at strengthening sustainable economic partnerships between the two nations.

A noteworthy event was the high-level dialogue held in January 2025, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. This dialogue facilitated a direct discussion between Prime Minister Sonexay and Japanese business representatives, aiding in the identification of investment challenges and the exploration of specific solutions.

In response to receiving the award, Secretary-General Kunihiko Hirabayashi expressed, "We are extremely honored to receive this medal. This accolade reflects the efforts of many individuals and organizations who have been involved in our collaboration with Laos, as well as the hard work of our Center's staff. Building on the trust we have developed, we aim to further enhance the partnership between Laos and Japan to contribute to sustainable economic cooperation."

Looking ahead, the Japan-ASEAN Center is committed to further fostering the development of Japan-Laos relations and will continue to actively strengthen the Japan-ASEAN relationship overall. The award signifies not only a recognition of past efforts but also a promise of dedication to future collaboration and mutual support in achieving shared goals.

The friendship between Japan and Laos serves as a testament to the impact of international cooperation, and the Japan-ASEAN Center looks forward to playing a pivotal role in that ongoing journey. Through their continuous partnerships, the Center is optimistic about contributing to a more interconnected and prosperous future for both nations and the wider ASEAN community.
