ROYPOW Marine Lithium Battery Systems Achieve DNV Type Approval
On June 25, 2025, ROYPOW's marine lithium battery systems were granted the esteemed DNV Type Approval certification during the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe held at the RAI Amsterdam. This certification signifies an important achievement in ensuring safety and regulatory compliance within the maritime industry. ROYPOW is among the very few companies globally to receive this rigorous certification, which raises the standards for energy solutions that are both safe and reliable for maritime operations.
What is DNV Type Approval?
The DNV Type Approval is a globally recognized certification issued by DNV, a leading classification society in the maritime sector. It verifies that a product meets stringent international safety and performance standards specifically for marine applications, based on exhaustive testing protocols. DNV conducted a comprehensive assessment of the ROYPOW battery systems, covering critical aspects such as system design, electrical and battery safety, environmental adaptability, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), functional safety, and adherence to environmental standards. The tests were performed according to established guidelines, including DNV0339 and IEC 62619.
Importance for Maritime Operators
For ship owners, operators, and systems integrators, DNV-certified solutions are widely recognized by regulatory bodies, enabling quicker deployments and simplified compliance. This is particularly beneficial in regions with strict carbon regulations, as certified systems can significantly reduce regulatory costs. Furthermore, acquiring this certification translates into proven reliability, easing maintenance costs, and enhancing the long-term investment returns.
ROYPOW's marine battery systems are engineered to reduce operational costs, enhance fuel efficiency, and meet the environmental goals of maritime operations. Featuring a modular design, the setup comprises LiFePO4 battery modules along with a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) and a DC-DC converter (DCB), offering flexible scalability. Each system supports up to 1000V / 2785kWh of energy, which can be expanded to reach a capacity of 100MWh when multiple systems are connected in parallel.
Safety Features
Safety is a foremost concern in the development of ROYPOW’s battery systems. These systems include advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) characterized by a robust three-level architecture, independent hardware protections, and integrated fire suppression systems in each battery unit. Additionally, the High Voltage Interface Logic (HVIL) for all power connectors and a gas extraction system ensures dependable performance even in challenging marine conditions.
With broad compatibility, ROYPOW systems are suited for hybrid or fully electric vessels and offshore platforms. This includes ferries, workboats, passenger ships, tugboats, luxury yachts, LNG carriers, service vessels, and aquaculture applications.
Looking Ahead
As the maritime industry evolves, ROYPOW commits to delivering high-performance, safe, and sustainable energy solutions to meet shifting demands. With ongoing advancements and a focus on innovation, the company aims to maintain its leadership in marine energy solutions and contribute positively to the fight against climate change.
