The 4th OFFICE DESIGN COMPETITION Encourages Students to Innovate Workspaces

The 4th OFFICE DESIGN COMPETITION: Shaping the Future of Workspaces

The 4th edition of the OFFICE DESIGN COMPETITION, curated by Frontier Consulting Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Shoten Kenchiku Co., Ltd., aims to inspire students to explore the field of office design. Taking place from May 29 to August 31, 2023, the competition revolves around the thought-provoking theme of 'Beyond Resilience'.

This event seeks to engage the youth in understanding the roles and responsibilities involved in creating work environments that support business activities. Starting in 2023, the competition has gained momentum, evidenced by the 77 submissions received last year, leading to intensive evaluations of 11 finalists and the awarding of five exceptional designs, including the prestigious gold award won by Hirota Tanaka from Kagoshima University's Graduate School of Engineering.

Eligibility and Participation

Participants must be enrolled in universities (including junior colleges and graduate schools), technical colleges, or specialized courses as of April 1, 2026, and must reside in Japan. Both individual and group submissions are accepted, with a maximum of five members per group. The awards ceremony will be held in mid-November in Tokyo, presenting Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Encouragement awards, alongside a special triangular scale for all winners. Prize money—¥500,000 for Gold, ¥300,000 for Silver, and ¥100,000 for Bronze—will also be provided, including travel allowances for winners attending the ceremony.

The Significance of 'Beyond Resilience'

In the face of unprecedented market fluctuations, natural disasters, and the vital need for trust among stakeholders, modern businesses face challenges that require not just strength but adaptability. The competition calls for visionary designs that redefine resilience, transforming offices from mere workspaces into centers for rejuvenation.

Today's offices should reflect an organization’s social significance, enabling them to re-establish connections with their mission and community, especially during challenging times. These spaces should seamlessly support workflows from emergencies to regular operations, turning adversity into opportunity.
