Uncovering the Charisma of Japan's Manufacturing Towns
On August 31st, a thought-provoking talk event will take place in Tokyo under the banner of
OFF TOKYO, a company dedicated to promoting lifestyles that transcend the typical Tokyo-centric view. Organized by
Shibire Inc., the event titled “Yen Sanjo Manufacturing Festival” will delve into the stories of individuals who continuously challenge the status quo and explore the unique culture rooted in manufacturing towns.
The Heart of Manufacturing in Sanjo City, Niigata
Sanjo City, located in the Niigata Prefecture, is renowned for its vibrant manufacturing industry, particularly in metalworking, tools, and knives. The town has strong historical ties to craftsmanship, which began during the Edo period when farming families were encouraged to produce traditional nails as a side business. Today, this legacy continues with a remarkable level of technical expertise and a rich manufacturing culture.
Visitors can experience the manufacturing process firsthand through open factory tours and workshops that showcase traditional metal forging techniques. The charm of Sanjo City is further highlighted every October during the
Yen Sanjo Manufacturing Festival, where approximately 130 factories across Sanjo and its neighboring city, Tsubame, open their doors to the public. This established event has become a focal point for attracting attention from across the nation and highlights the collaborative efforts of local businesses and artisans.
A Festival of Collaboration and Creativity
Over the past decade, the festival has facilitated connections among local enterprises and artisans, allowing them to share their crafts and innovations. This year, the
2026 Yen Sanjo Manufacturing Festival is set to take place from October 1st to October 4th, offering another exciting opportunity for attendees to witness the artistry behind crafting quality products and interact directly with skilled professionals.
The festival’s organizing committee comprises local individuals and business leaders who are passionate about making their community more engaging and vibrant. As a result, the festival has become a catalyst for deepening relationships within the community and inspiring some to move there or embark on new ventures.
Insightful Guest Speakers at the Event
The upcoming talk event will feature two notable guests:
Yutaro Miura, Vice Chairperson of the Yen Sanjo Manufacturing Festival Committee, and
Eiji Sasagawa, Executive Director of the same committee.
Yutaro Miura's Journey
Hailing from Hitachi City in Ibaraki Prefecture, Miura felt a sense of suffocation while living in Tokyo in 2022 and thus decided to relocate to Niigata, a region he had never lived in before. He currently supports initiatives that aim to help people move to rural areas and work on projects that create desirable living environments through his role at
Kiraboshi Co.
Eiji Sasagawa's Commitment
On the other hand, Sasagawa, a native of Sanjo, took over his family business—Sasagawa Plating—at the age of 28 after initially joining the firm. With a commitment to local engagement and collaboration, he upholds the company’s foundational spirit: “I never say it can’t be done.” He plays a significant role in both local youth organizations and the festival's management.
