EDB Emphasizes Importance of Energy Governance at UN Summit for Sustainable AI Development

EnterpriseDB (EDB) made a significant impact at the recent United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit, emphasizing the crucial need for energy governance in the era of agentic artificial intelligence (AI). With the rise of autonomous AI systems necessitating vast computational resources, EDB called upon both business leaders and governmental officials to integrate energy efficiency and sustainability into their core technological architecture rather than treating them as secondary issues.

Shifting the Focus to Energy Efficiency

In a keynote speech by Chief Legal Officer Rob Feldman, EDB highlighted findings from their recent research indicating a dramatic shift in how organizations approach their AI infrastructure. Among approximately 300 respondents, it was revealed that 69% now prioritize energy considerations more than ever when making decisions regarding data and AI platforms. Key factors influencing this shift include reliability of energy supply, which ranked highest at 49%, followed closely by cost and efficiency, both at 48%.

In the context of looming demands for energy owing to a projected increase in AI agents and doubling electricity requirements for global data centers by 2030, EDB emphasized the urgency for businesses to adopt proactive energy governance.

Designing Responsibility into AI Infrastructure

EDB advocates for a responsible AI framework, positing that systems must be designed to be sovereign, governed, trusted, and beneficial. The emphasis on governance at the data layer is central to this approach, allowing organizations to control their data’s location, access, and interaction with AI systems. EDB's strategy involves creating a sovereign AI operating system that seamlessly connects chips, models, and infrastructure.

They recently filed a patent application to develop AI agents capable of governing their peers, drawing a comparison to the self-checking mechanisms found in modern aircraft, which ensures safety and reliability in operations.

Intelligence Per Watt: A New Efficiency Paradigm

At the heart of EDB's philosophy is the principle of efficiency, which they describe as “intelligence per watt.” Their product, EDB Postgres® AI, is engineered to optimize computing resources, which results in a significant reduction in energy use. Benchmarks indicate that for certain clients, this approach can decrease token consumption by up to 57%—efforts EDB sees as vital for the successful management of AI workloads.

Through collaboration with major clients managing over 120 data centers, EDB is constructing a carbon calculator to quantitatively assess improvements in energy consumption and emissions resulting from workload consolidation and improved efficiency.

The Business Case for Sustainability

Rob Feldman articulated EDB’s belief that businesses need not compromise performance for sustainability. By using fewer resources, organizations can achieve better efficiency, lower costs, and reduce their environmental footprint, thus enhancing overall business resilience.

The urgency for these practices is highlighted through EDB's Sovereignty Matters study, which showed that organizations prioritizing AI and data sovereignty experience up to five times the return on investment compared to peers, and are significantly more inclined to build environmentally sustainable data centers.

Additionally, the growing expectation for transparency in environmental reporting is reshaping operational norms, making energy efficiency a critical aspect for those operating within AI infrastructures, rather than simply a component of ESG frameworks.

Leading Through Action and Collaboration

Beyond product offerings, EDB is committed to responsible practices within its own operations by setting science-based emissions reduction targets. The organization has established an internal AI Governance Committee and an
