Meijer Pioneers Online Shopping for WIC Benefits in Michigan
In a significant step towards enhancing food access for families in Michigan, Meijer has become the first retailer in the state to accept Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits for online grocery orders. This new initiative reflects Meijer's ongoing commitment to improving access to nutritious foods and supporting families in need.
A New Way to Shop for WIC Recipients
With the recent changes, Michigan residents can now utilize their WIC benefits while shopping online at
Meijer.com or through the Meijer mobile app. This transition from in-store only purchases marks a crucial evolution in how families can access essential grocery items. Previously, WIC recipients in Michigan had no option but to shop in-person to get their eligible products, but with this enhancement, shopping needs are being addressed more conveniently.
According to Don Sanderson, Meijer’s Director of Marketing, the company understands the vital role that healthy food access plays in the lives of families. By integrating the WIC program into their online shopping platform, Meijer aims to offer greater flexibility and ease for its customers. “We are proud to be the first retailer in Michigan to offer this service, continuing our tradition of making grocery shopping more accessible,” Sanderson states.
How It Works
To make use of the WIC benefits online, customers must link their WIC card to their mPerks account. This allows shoppers to enjoy a personalized experience where eligible food products are prominently displayed, helping to streamline the shopping process. This function not only simplifies transaction processes but also ensures that families can easily identify suitable items while they shop.
Additionally, to further cater to WIC beneficiaries, Meijer is providing free home delivery for online purchases made with WIC benefits. This added convenience addresses the challenges many families face when it comes to accessing healthy foods. For those who prefer to shop in-store but still wish to enjoy benefits, Meijer’s free pickup service is available for orders exceeding $35.
State Officials Reveal Importance of Initiative
