Its recent renovation has been led by the design firm HiGe Creative Partner, which has won two prestigious international design awards: the 'Platinum Winner' at the 2026 MUSE Hotel Awards and the 'Asia's Best Hospitality Interior Design' at the Asia Architecture Design Awards 2026.

The 'NEW JAPAN UMEDA' facility is a cornerstone of Japan's bathing and lodging culture, known for housing the world's first capsule hotel along with a series of large bathing areas and saunas. This innovative fusion of a capsule hotel and sauna facilities represents a unique cultural heritage that originated in Osaka itself. During the renovation, the designers focused on the intrinsic qualities of ‘Wa’ (Japanese aesthetics) and 'sauna', aiming to express a Japanese sensibility and perspective throughout the facility. Rather than relying on clichéd interpretations of 'Wa', the design seamlessly integrates surprise and humor, quintessentially Osaka, effectively enhancing the overall staying experience. This innovative approach resonated well with international judges, who were impressed by the facility's fresh take on traditional concepts.

Ground Floor: A New Icon for the City



The facade merges sauna symbolism with traditional Japanese aesthetics, creating a new identity for the streetscape. Essential sauna items like thermometers, towels, firewood, and stoves are creatively displayed. The use of large noren curtains (a traditional fabric divider) not only enhances the sauna's interior but also elegantly revitalizes the outdated exterior.

The design cleverly signifies the essence of a sauna while maintaining a Japanese flair. Visitors can instantly recognize the facility as a sauna, while locals appreciate the humorous twist—a hotel with a sauna fully integrated into the bustling shopping district. This strategic design acts as an exciting prelude to the experiences awaiting in the upper floors.

Third Floor: Revamped Capsule Rooms and Workspaces



Drawing from an original Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic, the third floor has been transformed, integrating vernacular colors like Benga color—known for its historical significance in Japan's urban architecture. The guest rooms are now stylishly unified under traditional Benga color, reminiscent of the old alleys in Japan’s historic shopping districts. This design pays homage to the cultural principles observed by merchants in the Edo era, where bright colors were avoided for modesty.

This floor also features a versatile lounge and work area that caters to modern business needs, equipped with a green color palette that serves as a calming backdrop for guests unwinding after a spa experience.

Fifth Floor: An Artistic New Experience



The fifth floor introduces guests to a modern capsule experience within a space that honors Kengo Kuma's architectural legacy. The original capsule design, recognized as a 'living architectural museum', has been preserved, showcasing the historical and artistic significance of the encapsulated space. A mirror ceiling creates a unique and immersive experience, allowing guests to interact with the capsule design from multiple perspectives.

In this space, an original projection inspired by the capsules serves to further enhance the stay, transforming lodging into an experiential journey through art and history.
