Universities and Tech Firms Collaborate for Enhanced Network Transformation

Boldyn Networks and University of North Dakota Complete Campus-Wide Network Transformation

On October 9, 2025, Boldyn Networks in collaboration with the University of North Dakota (UND) achieved a monumental milestone by finalizing the second phase of a comprehensive network transformation initiative. This extensive upgrade ensures high-density wireless coverage is now available throughout UND's campus, significantly boosting connectivity in crucial academic and research facilities.

Boldyn and UND embarked on this journey as part of the university's NetX initiative, which was strategically designed to enhance the overall network architecture to meet the long-term needs of the institution. Having successfully upgraded wireless connectivity in the university’s residence halls in 2024, this latest phase marks a significant expansion of the infrastructure at UND.

The deployment utilized existing equipment while integrating advanced technologies, including the installation of two next-generation firewalls, all without causing disruptions to campus operations. This phase ensures robust and secure wireless access in all academic buildings, research centers, and vital facilities such as the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the UND Flight School located at the Grand Forks International Airport.

A Vision of Innovation

"The University of North Dakota exemplifies a spirit of innovation and ambition that significantly influences the academic experience," said Matt Loecke, Executive Vice President for higher education at Boldyn Networks. He emphasized the importance of having a network infrastructure capable of supporting this innovative environment, extending from high-density student housing to critical academic and research buildings.

The results from the initial phase of the network rollout—upgrading the ResNet for all ten residential halls—set promising precedents. Following this transformation, the university recorded a notable decrease in support tickets related to wireless connectivity and minimal reports of issues at help desks. These improvements also meant that the on-site IT personnel required during peak times, such as the back-to-school period, were significantly reduced. This streamlined operations further enhances student satisfaction—a core goal for the UND administration.

Building on Success

With the achievements observed in Phase 1, Phase 2 of the rollout proceeded gradually, building by building, to ensure minimal service interruptions. Particular focus was placed on coverage density and reliability in essential academic environments, as maintaining connectivity during critical learning sessions is imperative. Whether it’s pilot training at the flight school or clinical research conducted at the medical facilities, faculty, students, and researchers can now expect consistently high-performance wireless connectivity.

The impact of Boldyn’s efforts and UND's forward-thinking NetX initiative paves the way for lasting benefits that include:
  • - Improved Access: Faster, more reliable connections on UND-Secured, enabling seamless onboarding for students, faculty, and staff.
  • - Enhanced Visitor Connectivity: A streamlined user experience with the upgraded UND-Guest Wi-Fi, allowing only internet access for visitors.
  • - Dedicated Residence Network: A separate ResNet network for residence halls, providing superior security, performance, and compliance.
  • - Expanded Coverage: The number of wireless access points in ResNet was doubled, leading to more expansive coverage throughout residential areas.
  • - Centralized Management: Enhanced flexibility and quicker response times through centralized management and automation.
  • - Cost Efficiency: Significant savings projected over the next decade in network management expenses.

A Commitment to Future Growth

According to Madhavi Marasinghe, Associate Vice President and CIO at UND, the goal during this modernization effort was clear: students deserve an experience comparable to, or even better than, what they have at home. The new ResNet delivers precisely that. This foundational upgrade supports the quality of the educational journey at UND.

With the core transformation now concluded, Boldyn Networks and the University of North Dakota are committed to further collaboration to facilitate future campus expansions and guarantee that UND remains a fully connected and forward-looking institution suited for the demands of modern education. The continuous partnership showcases the potential of technology to foster academic advancements and cater to the evolving needs of higher education.
