Identifying Company Strengths: Practical Seminar on Core Technology Selection and R&D Theme Development

In today's rapidly changing business landscape, where product lifecycles are shortening and innovative technologies, including generative AI, are transforming industries, traditional top-down approaches to research and development are becoming less effective. This creates a pressing need for research departments to identify valuable core technologies that can strengthen business proposals and enable entry into new areas. To address these challenges, the IAR Technical Education Research Institute is hosting an open seminar focused on core technology selection and research theme development through competitive benchmarking.

Seminar Overview

The seminar titled "Core Technology Selection and Research Theme Development through Competitive Benchmarking" will take place on August 21, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Participants have the option to attend either in person at the Nihon IAR Headquarters Conference Room or online via Zoom. While the in-person attendance is limited to 8 participants, there is no cap on online registration. The fee for attendance is 39,600 JPY (including tax), with discounts available for multiple participants from the same organization.

Learning Objectives

Led by instructor Kyoko Kawasaki, the seminar will cover a practical process for defining, comparing, evaluating, and selecting core technologies. Through group work and case studies, participants will gain hands-on experience and actionable insights that they can apply in their own organizations. Key topics include:

  • - Understanding Core Technology: Definitions, examples, and selection processes related to research and development.
  • - Competitive Benchmarking: Activities and processes to assess competition effectively, including stages within the gate process.
  • - Comparative Evaluation of Core Technologies: Analyzing and selecting core technologies against existing and adjacent markets to create a competitive roadmap.
  • - Future Market Core Technology Analysis: Evaluating core technologies for new market opportunities and predicting market needs.
  • - Research Theme Development: Methods for setting R&D themes and creating scenarios for continuing innovation.

Target Audience

This seminar is designed for professionals involved in new business planning, technology development (R&D and business divisions), management roles within these areas, as well as those responsible for technology strategy and solutions. If you are facing challenges in selecting core technologies or want to learn more about implementing competitive benchmarking, this seminar provides valuable insights and practical knowledge.
