Celebrating a Year of Progress: China-SCO Digital Economy Platform

On September 15, 2026, the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Digital Economy Cooperation Platform commemorated its inaugural anniversary, achieving remarkable milestones and setting the stage for future advancements. This event brought together about 100 government officials, leaders of international organizations, and representatives from both Chinese and foreign companies, all eager to explore the successes and ongoing developments of the platform.

The platform has successfully facilitated the execution of 29 cross-border cooperation initiatives. Located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, it has been pivotal in launching 70 digital economy projects, addressing sectors such as computing infrastructure, digital trade, and commercial aerospace. This pilot zone has not only enhanced digital connectivity but has also created a diverse computing resource pool, featuring 150,000 accelerator cards and more than 700 ecosystem partners, fostering collaboration and innovation.

In 2025, trade between the pilot zone and SCO member countries experienced a notable rise of 14 percent compared to the previous year. This growth underscores the effectiveness of the platform in bridging gaps between nations and promoting economic ties. Beyond conventional economic cooperation, the scope of the platform is extending into practical applications. One noteworthy venture includes the establishment of a commercial satellite data industry alliance in Tianjin, which provides services critical for crop monitoring, disaster warning, and environmental protection.

In academia, Tianjin University and Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly created the Qihuang Medical Hall, employing artificial intelligence and digital technologies to promote traditional Chinese medicine on the global stage. The integration of technology in culture and health is a testament to the platform’s commitment to multifaceted development.

To further bolster these efforts, the SCO digital economy think-tank alliance, comprising 28 institutions, is enhancing research and policies that guide digital transformations. During the anniversary event, agreements were reached on six new cooperation projects spanning areas such as AI infrastructure, smart logistics, geospatial intelligence, and digital healthcare, reflecting a significant commitment to expanding the scope of digital economy initiatives.

In a symbolic move to enhance multilateral dialogue, Tianjin unveiled “Hehe,” an innovative AI dialogue agent capable of supporting over 100 languages. This AI not only reflects technological advancements but also serves as a tool for fostering deeper cooperation among SCO partners focused on economic growth in the digital age.

As the platform enters its second year, the focus remains on building a more interconnected digital infrastructure that benefits all members of the SCO while advancing collaborative projects that enrich economic and cultural exchanges. The milestones achieved thus far serve as a foundation for new opportunities, ensuring that the China-SCO Digital Economy Cooperation Platform remains at the forefront of digital transformation in the region and beyond.
