Innovative Adhesive Solution for Automotive Displays by tesa and AUMOVIO
In an exciting development for the automotive industry, tesa, a leading manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes, has announced a collaboration with AUMOVIO, a technology company and a spin-off of the automotive division of Continental. Together, they have pioneered a groundbreaking adhesive solution specifically designed for the integration of automotive displays. This innovative approach not only enhances production efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals across the industry.
A New Dawn for Automotive Displays
As the automotive sector becomes increasingly focused on sleek and ultra-thin designs, the demand for effective adhesive solutions is more crucial than ever. The newly developed system by tesa and AUMOVIO combines cutting-edge bonding technology with optimized material usage, allowing for a controlled and removable adhesive union. This new technique promises to simplify corrections during the production process and facilitate repairs throughout the product's lifecycle.
What sets this solution apart is its ability to be fully automated into existing production lines, thanks to robotic application methods. The adhesive not only immediately supports weight after application but also maintains the ability to be detached when necessary. This feature is particularly advantageous, as it allows for selective replacement or repairs of display assemblies during production or servicing, eliminating the need to swap out entire modules.
Driving Efficiency and Sustainability
David Caro, the Automotive Director at tesa, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This partnership illustrates how innovative material technologies propel the future of mobility. Alongside AUMOVIO, we are providing automated adhesive unions that offer long-term durability but can also be easily removed. This fosters efficient production, extends product lifecycle, and supports circular product concepts.” These benefits are not only advantageous in terms of production but also contribute tangibly to sustainability efforts by reducing waste and promoting the efficient use of valuable components.
Pavel Prouza, who heads User Experience (UX) at AUMOVIO, added, “The combination of precisely automated application and the ability to selectively peel off portions adds a vital aspect to our manufacturing and quality processes. It solidifies the robustness of our production, minimizes material wastage, and encourages the efficient use of components.” This effectively means that future repairs could potentially require only the replacement of the affected components, rather than an entire unit, resulting in cost savings and reduced environmental impact.
Emphasizing Circularity
The newly developed adhesive solution stands as a significant step toward more sustainable production methods. By merging the established advantages of viscoelastic adhesive unions with properties promoting circularity, this adhesive does not require curing time and compensates reliably for thermal expansion across typical automotive environments. With a minimal tape width of just 2 mm, it allows for exceptionally narrow screen bezels akin to those found on smartphones.
Moreover, the ability to detach the adhesive when necessary facilitates the targeted replacement of display units during both production and maintenance, ensuring they can be recycled at the end of the vehicle's lifecycle. Discussions are already underway with automotive manufacturers regarding the implementation of recycling and repair programs for selected components. This support for a circular economy is a tangible contribution to AUMOVIO's sustainability strategy, offering economic, social, and environmental value through innovative mobility solutions.
With the official launch of this collaboration, tesa and AUMOVIO are on track to integrate their innovative adhesive solution into mass production by the second quarter of 2026, paving the way for more responsible automotive manufacturing practices.
