Shanghai Electric Celebrates International Biodiversity Day 2025 with Global Initiatives
Shanghai Electric Celebrates International Biodiversity Day 2025
On May 22, 2025, Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727) observed International Biodiversity Day under the theme of harmony with nature and sustainable development. The company showcased its ongoing efforts to integrate environmental protection into all phases of its development cycle. With projects spanning from the deserts of Dubai to the forests of Romania, and from the coast of Selangor in Malaysia to the Yumurtalik district in Turkey, Shanghai Electric emphasizes the importance of biodiversity through community collaboration, technological innovations, and international partnerships.
Global Contributions to Biodiversity Protection
Shanghai Electric aims to be a leader in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) practices. The company's 2024 report highlighted various initiatives that contribute to preserving global biodiversity. A prime example is the establishment of biodiversity protection systems at its solar thermal project in Dubai, where sensitive habitats were identified and safeguarded before construction commenced. Through fencing and curated pathways, the operations are carefully managed to minimize ecological disruption. This effort heightened employee awareness of local ecosystems and led to a community-driven desert cleanup initiative with municipal representatives in 2024.
In Romania, the Photovoltaic Project in Skurtu was designed to protect local forests by routing electrical cables around critical woodland areas, thereby avoiding any invasive road construction. This project, boasting a capacity of 56.03 MWp, will provide green electricity to around 48,000 households and is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 4,150 tons, reiterating Shanghai Electric’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Innovative Technology for Ecological Restoration
The Hunutlu thermal power plant in Turkey, a biodiversity hotspot inhabited by numerous reptile and invertebrate species on the IUCN's Red List of threatened species, demonstrates Shanghai Electric's commitment to eco-friendly practices. Utilizing cutting-edge, low-emission technology, the facility effectively reduces dust, sulfur, and nitrogen output. Importantly, no desulfurization wastewaters are discharged, thereby protecting the coastal waters of the Black Sea. Advanced systems also treat and recycle wastewater for agricultural irrigation purposes.
During construction, measures to protect local turtle populations included creating a volunteer team dedicated to beach cleanups and removing obstacles from nesting sites. The facility goes as far as limiting construction noise and curtailing nighttime lighting toward the sea, highlighting its commitment to protecting biodiversity and demonstrating ecological responsibility.
Community Collaboration in Malaysia
In October 2024, the project team at Shanghai Electric’s Selangor power plant participated in a beach cleanup led by the Malaysian Ministry of Environment. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and mitigate coastal pollution, resulting in positive impacts on marine biodiversity around Selangor. Participation in such initiatives not only demonstrates Shanghai Electric's commitment to sustainability but also highlights its environmental and safety policies focused on green, smart energy and ecological sustainability. Additionally, local authorities recognized these efforts with multiple environmental protection certifications, acknowledging their dedication to responsible development in the region.
As part of its continued commitment to promoting biodiversity in 2025, Shanghai Electric is focused on emphasizing the balance between industrial growth and environmental safeguarding. The company plans to leverage its strengths in clean technology and environmentally friendly production to foster
