Stäubli Expands BosCon Connector Series for Large-Scale PV Installations

Stäubli Enhances BosCon Connector Series for PV aluminum Cables

Stäubli Electrical Connectors has announced a significant upgrade to its BosCon connector product line, tailored specifically for large-format photovoltaic (PV) systems utilizing aluminum cables. This enhancement arrives as a response to the growing needs of the PV industry, particularly in utility-scale setups, where efficiency and reliability are paramount.

The new BosCon aluminum connector is designed with a focus on creating safe and efficient connections in demanding outdoor settings. By integrating advanced safety features and a robust design, Stäubli aims to address the challenges faced by installers working with high-current loads.

Key Features and Benefits

One of the standout features of the upgraded BosCon series is its dual certification for both factory and field installation, complying with the UL6703 and CSA C22.2 182.5 standards. Such compliance guarantees that the connectors are not only safe but also reliable for interconnecting large-format aluminum cables in various PV applications. Furthermore, the connectors accommodate cable sizes ranging from 4/0 AWG to 600 MCM, with maximum ampacity ratings of up to 559 A at 1500V AC/DC.

Brian Mills, the Head of Renewable Energy at Stäubli North America, emphasized that the BosCon line caters specifically to the North American PV market's demand for safe large-format cable connections. He noted that the new product simplifies both installation and maintenance, allowing installers to create secure connections in the field without the necessity of an electrician.

Innovative Design for Ease of Use

The BosCon connector boasts a unique coding system, featuring seven different mechanically keyed and color-coded rings on both the socket and plug ends. This innovation allows for easy assembly, helping to prevent common installation errors such as cross-mating of poles and phases, thereby reducing the risk of hazardous misconnections. The design also addresses compatibility concerns, preventing potential safety risks associated with mating connectors from different manufacturers.

Addressing Market Demands

Stäubli's commitment to the renewable energy sector is exemplified through the BosCon's ability to connect PV trunk cables to combiner boxes, disconnect boxes, central inverters, and even battery energy storage systems (BESS). As the demand for electric vehicle (EV) storage solutions and charging systems continues to rise, the BosCon connectors position themselves as a versatile choice for both AC and DC applications, contributing to a sustainable future in energy management.

Conclusion

With the introduction of the enhanced BosCon product line, Stäubli once again reinforces its leadership in the renewable energy sector. The new aluminum connectors stand as a testament to Stäubli's unwavering dedication to safety, reliability, and innovation in high-power connection solutions in harsh environments. As the industry moves towards larger-scale deployments, Stäubli is well positioned to meet the evolving needs of the PV market, setting new benchmarks in connector safety and performance.
