Kinokuniya and Keio Electric Railway Seal Stock Transfer Agreement for Keio Book Sales

In a significant move within Japan's publishing and transportation sectors, Kinokuniya Co., Ltd. and Keio Electric Railway Co., Ltd. have officially concluded a stock transfer agreement regarding the complete acquisition of Keio Book Sales Co., Ltd. on April 21. This strategic initiative marks an important step for both companies as they aim to bolster regional cultural contributions and enhance the value of the areas surrounding the Keio Line.

Founded in 1975, Keio Book Sales has been a fully owned subsidiary of Keio Electric Railway, primarily focusing on the operation of 'Keibundo Booksellers,' which has significantly contributed to the enhancement of community value along the Keio Line. Over its 50 years in operation, the bookstore chain has earned a reputation for not only selling books but also for fostering local culture and community engagement.

The agreement outlines that as of June 30, 2025, Keio Book Sales will officially become part of the Kinokuniya group, pursuing further growth to better serve local communities. This collaboration positions both companies to tap into Kinokuniya's rich managerial resources and established service framework, thus aiming to elevate the commercial value of the Keio Line region.

Kinokuniya, headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has been a stalwart in the book retail industry, known for its extensive selection of books, magazines, and other related products. The leadership team, under Chairman Masashi Takai, emphasizes the importance of integrating Keio Book Sales into their larger operational strategy to maximize regional benefits.

On the other hand, Keio Electric Railway, led by President Tomofumi Tsukimura, has continually sought ways to optimize its subsidiaries for better community engagement and economic growth. This stock transfer is expected to create synergies that benefit not only both companies but also the consumers who rely on their services.

Following the transition, Keio Book Sales might undergo changes in its business name and branding, indicating a fresh start under the Kinokuniya umbrella while retaining its mission to serve the community. This move aims to create a more comprehensive and cohesive approach to enhancing customer experiences and promoting local literature and culture.

With a network of 20 bookstores, Keio Book Sales has established itself as a local staple, providing residents with access to literature, magazines, stationery, and other educational materials. The upcoming integration with Kinokuniya is anticipated to enrich this experience further, providing customers with increased access to a wider variety of products and services.

As both companies move forward with this strategic acquisition, they are positioned to not only invigorate local bookstores but also contribute to the cultural fabric of the community, truly upholding their commitment to fostering a love of reading and education.
