Exploring Creativity Together at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum's Kids + U18 Day

Experience Creativity and Connection at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is hosting a special event called Kids + U18 Day, designed for children and their families to explore art together in a comfortable atmosphere. With the aim of encouraging young visitors to engage with the creative process, the museum will open its doors on a day that typically serves as a break from exhibitions, providing a unique opportunity for families.

The highlight of this event is the upcoming exhibition titled "Creating Joy: DIY for Living", scheduled to run from July 24, 2025, to October 8, 2025. This exhibition focuses on the concept and methods of DIY (Do It Yourself), showcasing the work of five contemporary artists and two architectural teams. It seeks to inspire visitors to create using everyday materials and to reflect on the importance of making in the context of various sociocultural issues, including the impacts of disasters and economic hardship that led people to lose many possessions.

During the Kids + U18 Day, attendees can experience guided tours and interactive sessions facilitated by the exhibition mediator known as "Tsukurun". Designed to foster a deeper appreciation of art, Tsukurun will help families share in the joy of art while providing meaningful insights into the displayed works. The experience includes engaging, participatory projects alongside contemplative observation of artworks, making it an enriching day for both kids and parents.

Special Features for Families

The museum has prepared several special tools to enhance the experience for families:

1. Door Boards Availability: Children can borrow sketch boards, allowing them to closely observe their favorite artworks and try their hand at sketching. The boards are erasable, giving them the freedom to create and explore without limitations.
2. Art Museum Guidelines Card: Upon entry, every visitor will receive an easy-to-understand card summarizing four key rules for a fun and collaborative museum experience.
3. DIY Exhibition Stickers: The first 100 participants will receive special stickers from Tsukurun as a token of participation. To claim this, the secret phrase is “Tsukurun!”
