Haier Smart Home Completes Acquisition of Kwikot

In a significant move bolstering its presence in the African market, Haier Smart Home Co., Ltd., recognized globally for its pioneering home appliance solutions, has successfully finalized its acquisition of Electrolux South Africa Proprietary Limited (ESA), which operates under the well-regarded brand Kwikot. The acquisition, valued at ZAR 2.45 billion, marks a pivotal moment in Haier’s strategy for expansion and innovation in the home appliance sector within South Africa and the broader Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.

Kwikot, a company with a rich heritage dating back to its founding in 1903, stands as a leader in water heating solutions. With an expansive range of products and a robust manufacturing footprint, Kwikot operates the largest water heater manufacturing facility in South Africa. The company’s extensive after-sales service network is complemented by an experienced local management team, which strengthens Haier’s adoption and access to the South African market. This move strategically positions Haier to leverage Kwikot's established distribution channels, including national retail chains and independent stores, enhancing its market penetration.

The acquisition not only promises to enhance Haier's market performance and global footprint but also aligns seamlessly with its ongoing growth trajectory. In 2023, Haier reported a staggering revenue of RMB 261.43 billion, showcasing a year-on-year growth of 7.33%. Furthermore, its net profit attributable to shareholders surged by 12.81%, indicating robust business health. Kwikot's impressive 2023 net sales of ZAR 1.9 billion (approximately RMB 753 million) and its positive EBITDA margin demonstrate a compatible growth path, ideal for integration with Haier’s diverse portfolio.

Guan JiangYong, General Manager of Haier Water Solutions and Vice President of Haier Smart Home, stated that this acquisition transcends a mere business transaction. He emphasized that it represents a commitment to honoring the legacy, culture, and long-term success associated with Kwikot’s established reputation. He expressed optimism that the fusion of Haier's advanced smart solutions with Kwikot's extensive local expertise will create transformative growth dynamics for South African households.

Moreover, the acquisition situates both brands favorably for future prospects in the burgeoning MEA appliance market. According to Statista, retail revenue in the MEA home appliance sector is forecasted to escalate from $88.3 billion in 2023 to a remarkable $131.8 billion by 2029. The recent inauguration of the Haier Egypt Ecological Park further signifies the company's commitment to fostering regional growth in collaboration with Kwikot’s strategy.

Murray Crow, the General Manager of Kwikot, expressed that Kwikot’s century-long legacy of trust and innovation blends harmoniously with Haier’s dedication to sustainable practices and customer-focused development. Together, they are poised to redefine market possibilities and enhance everyday life for consumers in the region. Furthermore, the culturally aware approach adopted by Kwikot aligns with Haier’s commitment to fostering economic and social growth within the communities they serve.

As Haier embarks on this new journey, the integration of Kwikot's skilled team will be pivotal in delivering eco-friendly products tailored to the preferences and needs of South African consumers. This acquisition represents a union that promises mutual benefits and innovative solutions, positioning both entities at the forefront of the home appliance industry. With a shared vision for excellence, Haier and Kwikot stand ready to meet the future with renewed vigor, adaptability, and commitment to sustainability, ultimately aiming to uplift the quality of life for families across the region.
