In a significant move to enhance passenger safety, EVA Air has officially joined IATA's Turbulence Aware platform, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and safety in the aviation industry. The announcement was made during the 81st Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the World Air Transport Summit (WATS), where EVA Air President Clay Sun and IATA Director General Willie Walsh signed a cooperation agreement.

As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, turbulence has become increasingly prevalent, posing challenges for flight operations and safety. By joining the Turbulence Aware platform, EVA Air aims to leverage advanced technology and real-time data sharing to improve safety measures during flights. This initiative marks a significant step in safeguarding passengers and ensuring smooth travel experiences.

"Despite advancements in technology, turbulence remains one of the most unpredictable weather phenomena," stated Clay Sun. He elaborated on the varying intensities of turbulence, which can range from mild shaking to severe conditions that risk damaging the aircraft. "Membership in Turbulence Aware will enable our pilots and dispatchers to analyze real-time data effectively, allowing them to select flight paths that minimize exposure to turbulence and maintain the safety of our passengers and crews."

IATA's Turbulence Aware platform gathers reports from participating airlines, providing a comprehensive view of turbulence conditions worldwide. This collaborative effort, which includes over 28 airlines and more than 2,700 aircraft, generated an impressive 51.8 million turbulence reports in 2024 alone, reflecting a 35% increase from the previous year. This wealth of information helps flight crews make informed decisions and adjust routes to avoid turbulent areas, enhancing both flight safety and passenger comfort.

Willie Walsh expressed enthusiasm for EVA Air's participation, noting that the collaboration would improve the operational capabilities of crew members and dispatchers globally. The enhanced data sharing facilitated by the Turbulence Aware platform aims to reduce the negative impacts of turbulence on both flights and the overall passenger experience.

To kickstart its contributions to this initiative, EVA Air plans to deploy 33 of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which will play a crucial role in collecting and reporting turbulence data.
