Connect, the prominent non-profit organization integral to San Diego's innovation landscape, has announced significant leadership changes that aim to build on its 40-year legacy of fostering life sciences and tech communities. With the recent departures of CEO Mike Krenn and COO Christie Marcella to pursue new roles within the region, the organization is embarking on a fresh chapter aimed at enhancing its impact and reach in the ecosystem.

Leadership Transition

Rick Valencia, a seasoned entrepreneur and long-time Vice Chair of Connect's Board, has been appointed as the Interim CEO. Valencia's extensive background in technology and life sciences positions him as a suitable leader to guide Connect during this transitional phase. His immediate focus will involve sustaining innovative programs and events that have defined Connect's legacy over the past decades.

In light of Krenn and Marcella’s departure, James Mackay, the Chair of the Board, acknowledged their incredible contributions, noting, "They have taken Connect to new heights and have left it stronger than ever." As the search for a permanent CEO commences, Valencia will work closely with the existing team to maintain momentum and continue providing valuable resources to the community. Founded in 1985, Connect has effectively positioned itself as a focal point of innovation in San Diego. Over the years, it has helped attract venture capital and foster startups, contributing to a vibrant $5 billion ecosystem. Its notable programs include the Cool Companies initiative, which showcases emerging startups to investors and has facilitated over $900 million in Series A funding since 2015.

The organization also spearheads the Innovation Day event, which celebrates the region's top companies in various sectors, showcasing the area's economic strength in a collaborative environment.

Furthermore, Connect has introduced impactful programs such as the XEO leadership program. Designed to nurture mid-level diverse professionals within the innovation sector, this initiative has become one of the foremost leadership endeavors in the country, boasting over 100 alumni poised to lead in various capacities.

According to Krenn, while the leadership change is significant, he remains committed to supporting Connect’s goals in his new role, which will involve investments in San Diego’s innovative firms. Marcella’s new role as Deputy Director of Community Business Engagement in San Diego’s Economic Development Department further signifies the importance of innovation within the city’s growth narrative. Her work will aim to ensure broader access to innovation benefits across the community.

The chairmanship succession plan includes Ashley Van Zeeland, who will take over as Chair for the 2027-2028 term, followed by Denise Bevers and Rick Valencia in subsequent terms.
