Interhome's Double Booking of Sustainable Summer Houses

In a striking analysis reported by Interhome, the prominent player in holiday home rental management across Europe, it has been revealed that bookings for sustainable holiday homes have seen a remarkable increase, more than doubling since 2020. This significant trend is covered in their newly launched series, the Sustainable Summer Booking Trends, which analyzes booking data from several key European markets including Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The findings are based on booking data for holiday homes with arrival dates between June and September, presenting a clear upward trajectory in sustainable options within the vacation rental sector. From 2020 to 2025, the proportion of sustainable summer bookings surged from 16.7% to 29.5%, reflecting a notable 12.8 percentage point increase and suggesting a fundamental transition in the holiday home market demand.

The growth rate, however, exhibits varying characteristics across different countries. As of 2025, Italy leads with a 40.1% share of sustainable bookings, followed closely by Germany at 36.1% and Switzerland at 35.9%. Meanwhile, Spain and France show a lower uptake, at 29.3% and 16.1% respectively, pointing to their distinct stages in developing sustainable travel offerings.

A breakdown of sustainability features reveals interesting insights into consumer preferences. Notably, recycling facilities have experienced the strongest uptake in the five countries analyzed, with France, Italy, and Spain making significant strides. Additionally, the presence of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations has shown notable increases, particularly in France and Switzerland, while solar panel installations have been most pronounced in Italy and Spain.
