A Special Exhibition: 'The Now of Yuki Nishimoto'
YUGEN Gallery Fukuoka, located in the heart of Fukuoka City, will be showcasing a unique exhibition titled
The Now of Yuki Nishimoto from June 13 to July 15, 2026. This event will focus on the remarkable journey of the sumi-e (ink painting) artist, Yuki Nishimoto, who has made significant contributions to contemporary art, pop culture, and traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Since 2019, when he adorned the walls of Shibuya Station and SHIBUYA109 with a stunning sumi-e depiction of Pokémon's Rayquaza, Nishimoto has captivated audiences globally. His work gained further recognition when his art was integrated into the popular card game
Magic: The Gathering in 2023. Additionally, he's set to open the Yuki Nishimoto Museum within Toyokawa Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s three major Inari shrines, in 2025.
Discovering Nishimoto’s Artistic World
This special showcase will present approximately 20 selected works, primarily featuring his iconic dragon motifs and animals, alongside artistic representations of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Nishimoto’s approach to sumi-e is distinctive as he connects contemporary and traditional elements, thus exploring new artistic horizons.
The exhibition will highlight the unpredictable essence of sumi-e, known for its unique interplay between brush, ink, and paper that creates fleeting, unrepeatable expressions. Visitors can expect high-quality giclée reproductions of his selected archives, showcasing the subtleties of brushwork, ink density, and texture. Accompanying these works will be video presentations depicting the creative process behind Nishimoto's artistry, allowing guests to engage with the palpable essence of original artworks.
The Art of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa
A standout aspect of Nishimoto’s portfolio is his work on the art of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa. This traditional festival has over 770 years of history and is recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, the festival showcases elaborate decorative floats collected from various locations within Fukuoka.
Since 2016, Nishimoto has designed the main visual for the
Solaeria float located in the commercial facility in Tenjin. In 2021, his work
Mousho Saizou Yamai wo Moshi Rizokeru expressed a prayer for a pandemic-free community by incorporating the local folklore of Saizou Kani, which is revered in Fukuoka for warding off sickness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nishimoto’s designs not only depict historical subjects but also encapsulate the vibrant energies of communities intertwined with their cultural narratives, bridging the past to contemporary experiences. This exhibition will also include products inspired by his floats, allowing visitors to reflect on the cultural significance of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa.
Exploring the Contemporary Sumi-e Expression
The exhibition is an attempt to highlight the relationship between traditional culture, the materials of sumi-e, and human expressions in our digital age. For those unfamiliar with Nishimoto’s work, this will be a valuable opportunity to experience a new form of sumi-e. Meanwhile, those already acquainted with his creations can rediscover the evolution of his artistic journey, from past works to future endeavors.
Tracing the path of Yuki Nishimoto allows observers to delve into the current state of traditional sumi-e, revealing much more than surface-level perceptions of Japanese aesthetics or merely technical prowess. It emphasizes the essence of ink painting, showcasing new artistic expressions that challenge conventions.
