AHRQ's Super Intelligence Competition Aims to Revolutionize Healthcare Evidence Evaluation

AHRQ's Super Intelligence Initiative: A New Era for Healthcare Evidence

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has made a groundbreaking announcement that could reshape the landscape of healthcare evidence synthesis. With the introduction of its Super Intelligence (SI) for Healthcare Improvement Initiative, AHRQ is launching a multi-phase prize competition aimed at significantly enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of medical evidence evaluations. This initiative comes at a crucial time when healthcare providers and patients alike struggle with the lengthy and often cumbersome process of evidence analysis.

Two-Part Competition

The initiative comprises two main components: the Clinical Evidence Synthesis Transformation Challenge and the SI Tech Sprint for Healthcare Research and Implementation Quality and Safety. The first part of the competition offers a staggering $5.35 million prize, marking it as the largest individual SI grand prize ever awarded. The challenge aims to evaluate systems that can drastically reduce the time required for synthesizing medical evidence—from over a year to mere hours. Participants will be assessed based on factors such as accuracy, throughput, reproducibility, usability, and operational ease.

AHRQ Director Roger D. Klein, M.D., J.D., emphasized the necessity of reliable clinical evidence for all stakeholders, including doctors, patients, payers, and policymakers. "We now have technologies that will allow us to accomplish the essential core function of evidence synthesis with previously unimaginable speed, consistency, and reproducibility," Klein stated. The challenge aims not only to foster innovation but also to ensure that American patients receive quality healthcare that is both effective and safe.

The second part of the initiative, the SI Tech Sprint, focuses on creating a supportive ecosystem for quality improvement and public access. By leveraging AHRQ's extensive databases on healthcare costs, utilization, and quality, this aspect of the initiative strives to enhance research capabilities and overall healthcare delivery.

Government Support for Innovation

This initiative aligns with President Donald Trump's executive order dated September 29, 2026, which aims to inaugurate an era of super intelligence. The executive order highlights the transformative potential of modern frontier systems, which are now poised to revolutionize science, medicine, and many other fields. AHRQ’s initiative seeks to capitalize on this momentum to tackle some of the healthcare sector's most time-consuming and resource-intensive challenges while also exploring new opportunities.

Gil Alterovitz, Ph.D., Chief Data Officer and Chief Super Intelligence Officer at AHRQ, proclaimed that the organization is uniquely equipped to harness recent advances in super intelligence for better healthcare outcomes. The combination of national data resources, evidence-focused expertise, and a commitment to enhancing care delivery paves the way for this ambitious initiative.

Call for Participation

AHRQ invites a diverse array of participants to engage in this competition, including individuals, teams, and organizations from both for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Importantly, nontraditional participants are highly encouraged to submit entries, enriching the pool of ideas and solutions that can emerge.

For those interested, AHRQ is hosting an informational webinar on the SI Tech Sprint scheduled for December 1, 2026. Additionally, submissions for Phase 1 of the Clinical Evidence Synthesis Transformation Challenge will be accepted until March 12, 2027, while SI Tech Sprint proposals will close on September 9, 2027.

As AHRQ promotes this initiative, it reinforces its commitment to improving healthcare not only by fostering innovative solutions but also by ensuring that the benefits of advancements in super intelligence reach all American people. The challenge presents an exciting opportunity to redefine how evidence is evaluated in healthcare, paving the way for better patient outcomes and more effective resource usage.
