EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund Joins ICEYE in Strategic Investment to Propel Satellite Technology
EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund Takes First Major Step into Satellite Technology
EQT, the leading global investment firm, has proudly announced the completion of its first investment through the Scaleup Europe Fund by co-leading a €1 billion funding round for ICEYE, a pioneering firm in the field of sovereign intelligence from space. Founded in Finland in 2014, ICEYE has grown to become a major player in the satellite technology sector, owning and operating the world’s largest constellation of synthetic aperture radar satellites.
The ambitious investment, which includes €450 million in primary proceeds from Series F at a valuation surpassing €10 billion, highlights the Scaleup Europe Fund's strategy to back promising technology companies across Europe. With a target size of €5 billion, the fund aims to tackle the scaleup funding gap that has historically limited European firms from reaching their full potential on the global stage.
As ICEYE has made significant inroads into Europe’s sovereign intelligence sector, it has established operations not only in its home country of Finland but also in Poland, Spain, Greece, Germany, and Portugal. The company has been recognized for its rapid deployment capabilities, having delivered an operational sovereign satellite system to Poland within a remarkable timeframe of less than a year following contract signing. This agility sets a new industry benchmark for satellite deployment.
Victor Englesson, Partner at EQT and Co-Head of the Scaleup Europe Fund, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership. He emphasized that this investment aligns perfectly with the fund's mission—supporting ambitious European founders committed to building globally competitive companies in strategically vital technologies. Englesson remarked, "ICEYE has established itself as a category leader, and we're excited to support them in their continuing journey to scale from Europe to the world."
The creative force behind ICEYE, Co-founder and CEO Rafał Modrzewski, shared the company's vision of expanding its sovereign intelligence capabilities, addressing the needs of European governments and emphasizing ICEYE's commitment to innovation and excellence. He stated, "Europe has the talent, technology, and ambition to create leading global companies in strategically important industries. Our own journey is a testament to that."
The Scaleup Europe Fund was designed to provide growth capital to companies engaged in critical technologies, thus empowering them to scale globally while maintaining their European roots. This alignment is essential as Europe seeks to strengthen its position in the global technology sector. The fund will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, clean energy, and space technology, ensuring a comprehensive approach to fostering innovation.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, concluded discussions about the investment, asserting the importance of supporting innovators within Europe. "When Europe invests in its innovators, Europe invests in its future. This is the goal of our Scaleup Europe Fund—it will ensure our scale-ups can find the resources they need to grow into world-leading companies," she stated.
The financial transaction is pending customary regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. As the landscape of space technology continues to evolve, ICEYE stands poised to pave the way for future advancements and partnerships within the sector, backed by the confidence and support of the Scaleup Europe Fund.
Overall, EQT's strategic investment in ICEYE symbolizes a commitment to advancing satellite technology and supporting the European tech ecosystem as a whole. By bridging the funding gap and fostering innovation, both the fund and ICEYE aim to make a significant impact on the technological capabilities available both in Europe and globally.
