HD Hyundai Avikus Sets New Global Standards for Autonomous Navigation Technology

Avikus Leading the Charge in Autonomous Navigation Technology

In an impressive advancement for autonomous maritime technology, Avikus, the specialized navigation subsidiary of HD Hyundai, recently secured Type Approval (TA) from DNV, a reputable Norwegian classification society, for its innovative HiNAS Control system. This significant milestone represents the first universal autonomous navigation support system designed for various vessel types to receive formal international certification, paving the way for its commercial deployment.

Founded under the leadership of CEOs Kang Jae-ho and Lim Do-hyeong, Avikus is intensifying its efforts in bringing autonomous navigation solutions to market. The HiNAS Control system includes advanced features for perception, decision-making, and control, enabling vessels to autonomously detect and navigate around nearby ships and obstacles. This capability is crucial in maintaining maritime safety and efficiency, particularly as the shipping industry faces increasing demands for automation.

The journey towards Type Approval involved a rigorous three-year collaboration with DNV, during which Avikus established safety requirements and verification frameworks for its autonomous navigation system. DNV's systematic evaluation included comprehensive assessments of collision avoidance capabilities, aligned with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). This thorough vetting process ensured that the HiNAS Control system meets stringent standards for safety and reliability.

One of the standout features of HiNAS Control is its operational efficiency—thanks to the Type Approval, shipowners can install the system without the need for additional verification processes. This development not only enhances deployment efficiency but is expected to further instill confidence in global shipowners who are increasingly looking towards innovation in navigation technology.

Currently, Avikus has already integrated HiNAS Control into their standard specifications for vessels designed by HD Hyundai since 2023, achieving over 500 cumulative orders. This indicates a solid market interest and acceptance of Avikus's technology as the maritime industry begins to embrace autonomous solutions at an accelerated pace.

As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) engages in discussions regarding the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, the insights gained from this DNV approval are likely to play a significant role in shaping future regulations surrounding autonomous navigation. Avikus’s proactive engagement with these regulatory frameworks positions it at the forefront of the industry, allowing for an agile response to evolving global standards.

“The Type Approval for HiNAS Control is a major milestone,” stated Vidar Dolonen, DNV's Korea and Japan Region Manager. “It signifies a leap forward in transitioning autonomous navigation technology from concept to reality.” This sentiment is echoed by Avikus’s CEO, Lim Do-hyeong, who emphasized their commitment to continuing the advancement of commercialization and steering the development of international standards in autonomous navigation.

As the global shipping landscape continues to evolve, HD Hyundai Avikus remains a pivotal player in leading the charge towards a more automated maritime future, inviting shipowners and stakeholders alike to embrace the revolutionary potential of autonomous navigation.
