Carnival Corporation Enhances Meal Donation Efforts in the Dominican Republic
In a significant step towards community support and sustainability, Carnival Corporation, the world's leading cruise company, has recently extended its surplus meal donation program to the Dominican Republic. This initiative highlights the company’s commitment to addressing food insecurity in areas where its ships frequently dock. Starting from Amber Cove in Puerto Plata, this program marks the Dominican Republic as the second Latin American nation to partake in this initiative, adding to the existing 18 ports globally involved since its inception in 2017.
The program, part of Carnival Corporation's strategy to minimize food waste, directs roughly 200 portions of transcended meals from its ship, Mardi Gras, to the Archdiocese of Puerto Plata, a local partner dedicated to distributing food to various community organizations that cater to families and the elderly. This well-coordinated effort is facilitated through collaboration with both local government entities and the talented culinary teams onboard Carnival Cruise Line.
As the program continues to grow, there are plans to implement it across all Carnival Cruise Line vessels that dock at Amber Cove. This will not only optimize food usage aboard the ships but will also provide critical resources to those in need within the community, tackling hunger head-on.
Since its launch, Carnival’s donation program has yielded impressive results, contributing over 320,000 meals worldwide as of the end of 2025. Vicky Rey, the vice president of government relations for Latin America at Carnival Corporation, stressed the importance of teamwork, urging efficient processes and shared community responsibilities for continued success. She stated, "This work depends on clear processes and strong coordination with government and local partners."
Claritza Rochtte Peralta de Senior, governor of Puerto Plata, acknowledged the value of this partnership, emphasizing the impact of collaborative efforts in ensuring that necessary resources reach those who require assistance in her province. The local investment underlines Carnival's long-standing connection to Puerto Plata, significantly boosting the region's appeal in the cruise tourism industry after its introduction in 2015.
Beyond the meal donation initiative, Carnival Corporation participates in several ongoing projects aimed at enhancing local community sustainability. This includes a partnership known as Maimón Basura Cero, designed to optimize waste management practices within the Maimón District, furthering recycling opportunities and promoting a circular economy.
By 2026, Carnival's operations are set to expand significantly with planned visits to six ports in the Dominican Republic, expected to draw over 1.3 million cruise guests, encapsulating 50% of the cruise market share in the country. This strategic growth reflects Carnival Corporation’s dedication to creating a value-driven presence in the Dominican Republic.
As Carnival Corporation solidifies its position as a responsible corporate citizen in the cruise industry, its meal donation program serves as a commendable model of how large corporations can embrace social responsibility, assist in local empowerment, and shape a sustainable future for the communities they engage with. Every meal donated is a step closer to alleviating hunger and promoting better living standards in these areas.
