JFA×Kirin Family Challenge Cup 2025

On October 4, 2025, the much-anticipated JFA×Kirin Family Challenge Cup took place at Tsudome, Hokkaido, creating unforgettable moments for families across Japan. This event, co-hosted by the Japan Football Association (JFA) and Kirin Holdings, aims to foster bonds among family and friends through an inclusive walking football experience.

In a spirit of togetherness, the day encouraged participants of all ages, from toddlers to seniors in their 90s, to experience the joy of the game. With approximately 292 participants forming 32 teams, the event was a vibrant mix of laughter and team spirit. Prominent guests, including former Japanese national football players like Yosuke Kashiwagi and Yoichiro Kakitani, participated and showcased the possibilities of sports bringing generations together.

The Essence of the Event

The primary goal of the Kirin Family Challenge Cup is to deepen connections through football, embodying the philosophy that sports can enrich daily life. The event, launched in December 2022, has already seen around 2000 participants from diverse age groups, all playing a significant role in creating an atmosphere filled with smiles. The core theme, “When Families Become Teams,” emphasizes the importance of participation and interaction among family members.

Yuuichi Yamada, director of Kirin Holdings’ marketing strategies, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, remarking on the power of football to unite people across generations. As he welcomed everyone, the excitement was palpable. “Let’s all enjoy our time together,” he said, setting the tone for the day.

The Joy of Walking Football

During the event, guests and participants engaged in a fun-filled match of walking football, a version of the sport designed to be accessible for all, irrespective of age or ability. Many attendees remarked on how special it was to engage in a physical activity with family members, contributing to their growing bonds.

“I was looking forward to this day! Playing with my grandparents was fantastic, and it truly deepened our connection,” said one enthusiastic child. This sentiment resonated across the venue, with many expressing their joy after playing together as a family.

Spectacular Performances and Memories

As a unique highlight, participants were encouraged to devise creative goal celebrations, infusing the event with additional excitement. Dances coordinated by EXILE TETSUYA launched the fun atmosphere even further, enabling everyone to join in on a special Cracky! Dance, crafted by the Japan Football Association. The combination of physical activity and enjoyment bore witness to the spirit of family fun.

Former national players provided encouragement and camaraderie, creating a nurturing environment. Participants were also surprised to be awarded the Goal Performance Prize, celebrating their creativity and teamwork.

Reflections from Participants

Guest players shared their joy in witnessing the smiles and excitement of participants. Former player Kakitani noted, “The experience of connecting through a single ball, regardless of age or gender, was brilliant. Everyone’s smiles were heartwarming.”

With every game played, not only were connections strengthened, but the event also exemplified how sports could bridge generational gaps. The occurrence of joyful scenes, such as a grandparent scoring and being cheered on by grandchildren and children, was a profound testament to the day’s purpose.

“My first experience playing alongside my grandmother was remarkable,” said a third-grade girl, showcasing how the event left a lasting impression on younger generations.

Closing Remarks and Future Aspirations

As the event drew to a close, JFA’s Kazuyuki Yukawa reiterated the commitment to creating spaces where families can come together and share joyful moments through sports. Looking ahead to future events, there is hope for the Kirin Family Challenge Cup to expand, allowing more families across Japan—and even internationally—to experience this sense of connection.

The JFA×Kirin Family Challenge Cup 2025 is more than just a sports event; it is a celebration of community, family, and joy that transforms ordinary days into magical moments. This innovative approach showcases the essence of walking football and its ability to bring together individuals from all walks of life, proving that happiness truly lies in shared experiences.
