Deoleo's Pioneering Approach to Sustainability
Deoleo, recognized globally as the top olive oil producer and parent company of notable brands like Bertolli, recently published its 2024 Sustainability Report. This report not only underscores the company's commitment to high standards in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices but also marks a significant milestone as the first in the olive oil industry to align with the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) standards ahead of its compliance deadline.
Achievements that Stand Out
In its latest report, Deoleo detailed several significant accomplishments reflecting their dedication to sustainability:
- - A 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the past two years.
- - 94% of factory waste has been either repurposed or valorized.
- - A 12% increase in extra virgin olive oil sourced sustainably.
- - All of its copackers and suppliers were assessed for ESG performance.
- - Water usage was reduced by 31%, and 98% of electricity utilized came from renewable sources.
Thierry Moyroud, CEO of Deoleo North America and Latin America, emphasized, “At Deoleo, sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a core purpose that starts at the source of our oil.” This demonstrates the company’s mission to impact positively every step of its supply chain, from the fields right to consumers’ homes.
Leading in the Olive Oil Market
Deoleo has developed and implemented a pioneering Sustainability Protocol that now has certified 88 mills around the world. These mills manage more than 835,000 acres of farmland, collaborating directly with nearly 60,000 farmers. In 2024 alone,
39% of Deoleo's extra virgin olive oil originated from these certified mills, taking a significant step towards their ambitious target of
70% by 2030.
Governance and Recognition
On the governance front, Deoleo received prestigious acknowledgments, such as a certification from the
AENOR Corporate Governance Index with a G++ rating and a
Platinum Medal from EcoVadis, placing them within the top 1% of
150,000 global companies for ESG excellence. These accolades reflect the organization’s commitment beyond just environmental concerns to encompassing all aspects of governance.
Championing Diversity
Moreover, Deoleo places a strong emphasis on internal diversity and the promotion of women in leadership roles. Currently,
40% of the company’s workforce is represented by women, with new initiatives like the “Growing Together” Congress set to further support women’s advances throughout the value chain.
Maria Martha Luchetti, Deoleo's Director of Marketing, Innovation, and Sustainability, reinforced this sentiment, stating, “Each achievement in our Sustainability Report signifies our ongoing commitment, which is not merely an aspiration but a tangible reality.”
