CVC DIF Acquires Majority Stake in firstcolo to Enhance Data Center Capabilities in Germany

CVC DIF Expands Data Center Portfolio with Firstcolo Acquisition

CVC DIF, the infrastructure arm of CVC, a global asset manager, has made a strategic move by acquiring a significant majority stake in firstcolo GmbH. This acquisition marks a pivotal step toward enhancing firstcolo's capabilities in data center services within the competitive Frankfurt metropolitan area.

Partnership Overview

Founded in 2007, firstcolo has established itself as a leading provider of data center and digital infrastructure solutions. Currently, the company operates two data centers in the region and delivers high-quality colocation services, dedicated hardware, cloud computing, connectivity, and managed services to over 350 clients. With this acquisition, CVC DIF aims to support firstcolo’s next growth phase, particularly through the development of an advanced facility known as the FRA7 project.

The FRA7 Project

The FRA7 data center is set to be a cornerstone in firstcolo's evolution. Established in Rosbach vor der Höhe, this state-of-the-art facility will feature a total capacity of up to 24 MW, accommodating a maximum load of 16 MW. Each high-density rack within the facility is designed to support up to 200 kW, making it well-equipped for demanding workloads, including artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications.

Significantly, the FRA7 center will incorporate cutting-edge technologies and systems intended for seamless integration with AI workloads. With efficient liquid cooling systems and robust electrical infrastructure, this facility will cater to the next generation of computational tasks and industry requirements.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Firstcolo emphasizes energy efficiency, aiming for a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating below 1.2 for the FRA7 project. The data center is not only designed with advanced cooling solutions but also commits to sustainability by partnering with regional energy provider OVAG. This collaboration will focus on integrating renewable energy sources and utilizing waste heat from the data center for urban heating networks, reinforcing firstcolo’s commitment to eco-friendly operations.

Management and Strategic Vision

The founding team, including CEO Jerome Evans and COO Nicolaj Kamensek, will remain actively engaged in the company's management while retaining a stake in the business. They envision the partnership with CVC DIF as a significant endorsement of their past efforts and a crucial factor in realizing the company’s long-term goals.

Jerome Evans expressed, "The partnership with CVC DIF marks an important milestone for firstcolo, and it reflects the significant achievements our team has accomplished over the years. We are excited to work with CVC DIF, whose vision aligns closely with ours, to realize the FRA7 project."

Nicolaj Kamensek added, "Since our inception, firstcolo has stressed technical excellence and operational reliability. With the FRA7 project, we will expand our existing capabilities, ensuring we meet our clients' future needs with the same quality standards they have come to expect from us."

Future Prospects

As firstcolo braces for this transformative phase, it expects to leverage its established operational strengths while expanding its footprint in the Frankfurt metropolitan area. With CVC DIF’s backing, firstcolo is poised to enhance its platform for clients expecting robust, reliable, and scalable data center services. This growth aims not only to support local demand but also to pave the way for future expansion in other promising German markets.

In summary, the acquisition of firstcolo by CVC DIF highlights a strategic investment in a premier data center operator, anticipating significant advancements in infrastructure tailored for AI and cloud computing environments. This partnership aims to reshape the landscape of data services in Germany, positioning firstcolo as a principal player in the colocation market, equipped to handle increasing digital demands well into the future.
