The ALS Network is set to honor the significant contributions of Grammy award winners and nominees during its annual Champions for Cures and Care event on January 17, 2025. This luxurious gathering will take place at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, where the ALS community will join forces to recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to advancing the ALS Network's mission.
Attendees can look forward to a jubilant evening filled with fine wines, cocktails, a silent and live auction, a three-course dinner, special guest appearances, and live entertainment. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the prestigious Essey Awards, which acknowledge outstanding commitment and achievements within the ALS community.
The Essey Spotlight Award is to be presented to Grammy winner Kitt Wakeley and fellow producers from the album
Impossible Dream, including David Das, Jonathan Estabrooks, Patrick Conlon, Sydney Anderson, and Christina Giacona. This album, featuring celebrated Broadway talents, has garnered a nomination for the 2025 Grammy Awards, and proceeds have been directed towards supporting the ALS Network's mission.
This year will also see the recognition of Patricia 'Patty' Schimbor and Susan 'Sue' Morris through the Essey Commitment to Care Award for their invaluable efforts in the ALS community. Patty has selflessly volunteered for over a decade, inspired by the memories of her husband and her late law partner. She guided the ALS Network through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic while enhancing care programs to better serve the community. Likewise, Sue has played critical leadership roles in honor of her late husband, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the mission's priorities related to care for ALS patients and their caregivers. Her family’s initiative, the Morris Family Caregivers Initiative, further enhances support for caregivers.
The live auction will be spiritedly hosted by television personality Franco Finn, known for energizing the crowd during the Golden State Warriors games. Guests will also enjoy the musical talents of renowned guitarist Carlos Calvo, often dubbed the 'Guitar Teacher to the Stars,' who will blend Folk/Pop with his soulful guitar play.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative condition affecting the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, severely impacting voluntary muscle control. The average lifespan after diagnosis is tragically short, lasting between two to five years. As ALS progresses, patients lose the ability to walk, speak, and eventually breathe, while their cognitive functions remain intact. Notably, veterans carrying an increased risk are disproportionately affected. Currently, no definitive cause or cure for ALS exists.
Proceeds from this event will significantly bolster the ALS Network’s initiatives focused on caregiving services, public policy advocacy, and cutting-edge global research aimed at discover effective treatments and cures for ALS. Sponsorship opportunities and tickets for the event are available for purchase. Interested individuals can reach out to Asher Garfinkel at [email protected] for further details.
