The Everglades Foundation Surpasses $76 Million in Conservation Efforts

Everglades Foundation Achieves Historic Fundraising Milestone

The Everglades Foundation has made headlines recently, announcing that it has successfully surpassed its ambitious fundraising goal by raising an impressive total of $76 million. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the organization's commitment to preserving Florida's beloved Everglades.

This success comes as a result of the Foundation's first endowment campaign, known as the ForEverglades Endowment Campaign, which ran from 2022 to 2024. Eric Eikenberg, the CEO of the Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the pioneering supporters, stating, "The supporters of this endowment have played a vital role in a historic legacy. We are deeply grateful to these philanthropists who share our vision for a healthy and vibrant Everglades, perpetually protected by skilled scientists, policy experts, and educators."

A total of 80 donors contributed to this fundraising effort, reflecting a broad commitment from individuals, foundations, and businesses alike. This bipartisan support showcases a collective desire to address the challenges faced by the Everglades and ensure its restoration for future generations.

The funds raised through this campaign will play a critical role in strengthening the Foundation's initiatives, enabling it to nimbly respond to emerging challenges while ensuring long-term sustainability. The endowment will support three primary areas: science, advocacy, and education, central to the Foundation's operations.

Carlos de la Cruz Jr., Chairman of the Foundation's Board, emphasized the importance of this endowment for the restoration of the Everglades, stating, "Our freshwater, economy, wildlife, and way of life in the beautiful state of Florida depend on it." He highlighted the unanimous commitment of the Board of Directors toward the endowment campaign, ensuring its longevity and the continuation of the Foundation's mission.

Marshall Field V, Chairman of the ForEverglades Endowment Campaign, who also has a rich history with philanthropic efforts, noted the ongoing threats to the Everglades even after restoration efforts are complete, such as development encroachment and saltwater intrusion. Field asserted the importance of safeguarding the Everglades' freshwater resources, stating, "We must protect that water from being wasted, polluted, or diverted for private industry's exclusive use. Freshwater in Florida is the public's resource, and it must be valued for the biodiversity that depends upon it."

The successful conclusion of this endowment campaign promises a sustainable future for the Everglades, allowing for continuous protection and preservation efforts. According to the Foundation, this campaign is about envisioning a future for the Everglades long after its current advocates move on, ensuring that this unique ecosystem remains intact for generations to come.
