Backlog Launches Grandchild Tasks for Detailed Project Management

Enhanced Project Management with Backlog's Grandchild Tasks

Nulab, a company headquartered in Fukuoka City, Japan, is taking project management to the next level with the introduction of the 'Grandchild Tasks' feature in its widely used task management tool, Backlog. Set to launch on August 18, 2026, this new feature will enable users to manage tasks by creating a three-tier hierarchy, adding an additional layer of organization to already existing parent and child tasks.

The Need for Enhanced Task Management

Until recently, Backlog supported task management through a simple two-level structure consisting of parent and child tasks. However, feedback from users managing large and complex projects indicated that child tasks often encompassed vast territories of work. This situation made it challenging to monitor responsibilities and progress effectively. Users had to resort to combining existing functions or even managing task details in spreadsheet software, which proved inefficient.

Responding to these demands, Nulab focused on developing a scalable solution that encompasses the user's need for deeper task management without sacrificing the simplicity and user-friendliness that Backlog is known for. The 'Grandchild Tasks' feature maintains a clean interface while providing the capability for more detailed task breakdowns, limited to three levels of structure to keep usability high.

Features of Grandchild Tasks

The newly implemented Grandchild Tasks can be observed directly from the task display screen, and their structure will also reflect in various progress tracking tools like Gantt charts and boards. Furthermore, this feature will be available across all mobile app platforms, including both iOS and Android.

Initially, the Grandchild Tasks feature will be disabled by default to minimize clutter. Project administrators will have the option to enable this feature on a per-project basis, allowing each team to customize their task management workflows according to specific project needs.

Display Capabilities

  • - Three-tier Display: Task lists will showcase the entire hierarchy—parent, child, and grandchild tasks—providing a more detailed view of project engagement.
  • - Gantt Chart Integration: The hierarchical structure will also be represented in Gantt charts, allowing for visual tracking of related tasks and timelines, which is essential for project planning and deadlines.

Launch Details

  • - Release Date: The Grandchild Tasks feature will start rolling out on August 18, 2026, and is expected to be available across all relevant environments throughout August 2026.
  • - Available Plans: This feature will be accessible to users subscribed to Backlog's Premium and Platinum plans.
  • - Platforms Supported: Both the web-based version and the dedicated mobile applications for iOS and Android will support this new functionality.
