Tabetech's Journey in Agricultural Innovation
Tabetech, a cutting-edge startup derived from Kyushu University, has made significant strides in the agricultural sector. Recently, the company was approved for Phase 2 of the Startup Comprehensive Support Program (SBIR Support) by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), effective June 30, 2025. This acknowledgment highlights Tabetech’s commitment to pioneering advancements in agricultural technology, particularly focusing on the preservation and quality improvement of sweet potatoes.
The current research initiative titled, "Long-term Storage and Quality Enhancement of Sweet Potatoes Using Plasma Sterilization Technology - New Perspectives for Export Expansion and Food Security," aims to revolutionize food preservation processes. At the heart of this endeavor lies Tabetech’s proprietary technology, Plasma Pallet™, which allows for the retention of freshness in a non-contact and chemical-free manner.
With this groundbreaking approach, Tabetech plans to substantially reduce reliance on refrigeration systems while maintaining high-quality storage conditions. This innovation is set to prevent quality degradation during exports and significantly reduce food waste. Looking ahead, the company envisions contributing to the stabilization of food supply both domestically and internationally as well as enhancing food security.
Initial trials are slated to commence in July 2025 at a dedicated testing facility located in Ota City, Tokyo. This phase will involve refining the technology based on empirical data and fostering collaborations with producers and exporters. Additionally, there are future plans to target emerging markets in Africa and the Middle East, where expansion into sweet potato exports is anticipated.
The research is being executed in partnership with esteemed faculty members from Kyushu University, including Professor Nobuya Hayashi and Associate Professor Yoshito Yanagiu. Through this academic collaboration, Tabetech is dedicated to the practical implementation of its technologies in society, aiming to bridge the gap between research and real-world applications.
