Enhancing Collaboration at the Global Video Media Forum 2024
The 12th Global Video Media Forum (VMF) kicked off recently in the historic city of Quanzhou, located in Fujian Province, China. This two-day event attracted around 200 representatives from over 87 media organizations spanning more than 60 countries and regions. Quanzhou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is recognized for its rich history as a trading port, making it a fitting venue for discussions centered around global collaboration.
Hosted by the CCTV Video News Agency of the China Media Group (CMG), the forum was themed "Intelligence Without Frontiers, Vision Beyond the Horizon -- Media's Role in Communication and Cultural Exchange." The primary goal was to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the media sector while fostering a multi-faceted dialogue that enhances the voice of the Global South.
One of the standout achievements of this year's forum was the unveiling of the
Joint Initiative for Media Dialogue and Cooperation of the Global South. CMG President Shen Haixiong, along with various dignitaries, announced this initiative, which aims to construct a more robust narrative system for the Global South. This initiative was presented in collaboration with organizations such as the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union and the African Union of Broadcasting.
Goals of the Initiative
The key objectives of the Joint Initiative include:
- - Amplifying Voices: It seeks to elevate the narratives from the Global South to ensure equitable representation in global media outlets.
- - Fostering Learning: The initiative promotes mutual learning exchanges among nations to share stories, cultures, and best practices.
- - Advocating Justice: It aims to push back against global inequalities by advocating for a fair media portrayal of the Global South.
Furthermore, the forum delved into cultural exchange initiatives, including a global promotional video for CMG's annual
Spring Festival Gala, regarded as one of the most-watched TV programs worldwide.
The event also introduced four high-quality dramas and documentaries aimed at providing audiences insight into Chinese culture, history, and contemporary social issues. These productions reflect the daily lives of Chinese citizens while showcasing significant advancements in environmental conservation and space exploration.
Future Initiatives
Looking ahead, the CMG announced continued film and television initiatives for 2025, targeting audiences in regions such as Central Asia, Europe, and North America. These initiatives will offer a holistic view of China to global audiences, allowing them to engage deeply with the nation's evolving identity.
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, a campaign named
'China Up Close' has been launched, which integrates diverse media formats encouraging reporters and influencers to explore China's dynamic development first-hand.
In alignment with Quanzhou's legacy as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, this year's forum also inaugurated the
International Communication Season. This program aims to weave the stories of the ancient trade route with modern narratives, enhancing China's global narrative.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the
CMG 'Jingcai Voice' Experience Room, which featured state-of-the-art 3D audio technology applications. Panel discussions covered various sub-topics such as AI's effectiveness in media, the importance of intelligent communication platforms, and strategies for advancing digital civilized engagement in Global South countries.
As the forum concluded, the excitement surrounding new possibilities for cultural dialogue and media cooperation continued to resonate, potentially setting the stage for a more cohesive and inclusive media landscape in the coming years.
