Milestone Achieved
Hanon Systems, a key player in automotive thermal management, has recently announced a remarkable milestone, surpassing the production threshold of
1 million units of their electric compressors utilizing the
eco-friendly refrigerant R744 (CO2). This achievement, reached just over 1.5 years after hitting the
500,000 units mark in January 2024, showcases Hanon Systems' significant presence and rapid growth within the electric compressor sector.
Production at Palmela Facility
The production of R744 electric compressors takes place at Hanon Systems' state-of-the-art facility located in
Palmela, Portugal. This location is pivotal in supplying components tailored for Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, which is dedicated entirely to electric vehicles. The surge in demand for R744 compressors aligns with the expanding European electric vehicle market, as evidenced by numerous automotive giants launching new electric vehicle models at key industry events like the
IAA Mobility earlier this month.
Environmental Impact of R744
R744 is recognized for its minimal environmental footprint due to its
global warming potential (GWP) of just 1, making it a sustainable alternative to conventional refrigerants. Electric compressors are crucial for electric vehicle heat pump systems, driving the refrigerant cycle to enhance both cabin comfort and vehicle performance. By employing R744, the compressors not only contribute to reducing the environmental impact of electric vehicles but also help preserve driving range during colder weather. Furthermore, R744 provides compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, thus supporting global efforts to adopt electric vehicles.
Hanon Systems’ Commitment to Innovation
Hanon Systems leverages decades of experience in developing advanced thermal management solutions that work with a variety of refrigerants. Notably, the company was the industry's trailblazer in designing an eCompressor specifically for automotive climate control that utilizes R744. In addition to serving R744 solutions, Hanon Systems is making strides in next-generation eco-friendly refrigerants, such as
R290 (propane), while also accommodating traditional refrigerants like R134a and R1234yf. This diverse portfolio positions the company to adeptly respond to evolving global demands and trends in the automotive sector.
Leadership Statements
Soo-il Lee, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hanon Systems, expressed enthusiasm about the company's achievements, stating, "Hanon Systems continues to drive innovation in automotive thermal management solutions. Surpassing 1 million units in R744 electric compressor production is a testament to our leadership in eco-friendly technology and marks a significant milestone in our commitment to a sustainable future. As part of the Hankook Company Group, we benefit from collective innovation that enables us to achieve milestones like this."
Rich History of Manufacturing Excellence
The Palmela plant, originally established in
1988 for mechanical compressors, incorporated its first
electric compressor into production in
2009. Situated approximately 25 kilometers south of Lisbon, the facility's strategic location enhances logistics efficiency across the broader European value chain, allowing Hanon Systems to serve its clients more effectively.
