Hankook's iON Race Enhances Competitive Racing at the Madrid E-Prix

Hankook Tire & Technology, a global leader in tire manufacturing, played a pivotal role in the recently concluded Madrid E-Prix, part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This event, hosted at the iconic Circuito del Jarama, marked the first single-header race to incorporate the innovative PIT BOOST feature as well as an updated ATTACK MODE, which significantly impacted race strategies.

In a dramatic race that unfolded over 23 laps, the teams showcased their energy management skills on the lengthy 3.934 km circuit known for its fast corners and elevation changes. The introduction of PIT BOOST alongside the revised ATTACK MODE added layers of complexity, making strategic execution critical for success on this historic racing ground.

António Félix Da Costa of Jaguar TCS Racing clinched victory, leading a remarkable 1-2 finish, with teammate Mitch Evans right behind him. Porsche Formula E’s Pascal Wehrlein completed the podium, demonstrating how strategy intertwined with energy management was fundamental throughout the race.

Hankook's iON Race tire proved to be an asset during the competition, offering robust grip and stable thermal performance under varying track conditions. Despite the challenge of limited historical race data for the venue, the tire's consistent performance allowed teams to confidently navigate their PIT BOOST and ATTACK MODE strategies. The need for adaptable tire characteristics was particularly crucial given Jarama's rapid directional shifts and continuous cornering loads.

In the words of Manfred Sandbichler, Senior Director of Hankook Motorsport, 'The Madrid E-Prix was a unique opportunity to observe how teams adapted their strategies on the longest circuit in Formula E. The dynamics of the race, influenced by PIT BOOST and the revised ATTACK MODE, reinforced the importance of tire consistency as teams aimed for optimal energy management and race pacing.'

With Round 6 of the championship now complete, attention turns to the next two rounds in Berlin. Teams will face new challenges at the well-established Tempelhof circuit, each race promising unique opportunities and testing the limits of both technology and strategy. Hankook’s ongoing contributions to the event ensure that motorsport fans can expect even more thrilling experiences in the rounds ahead.

As advancements in tire technology continue to make significant strides, the importance of brands like Hankook in the arena of competitive racing reinforces their commitment to innovation and excellence. The combination of electric racing and high-performance tires not only emphasizes sustainability but also elevates the excitement of motorsport, making events like the Madrid E-Prix crucial in promoting the future of racing technology and strategy.
