Diablo Canyon 2045 Coalition Launches to Secure California's Energy Future

A newly established coalition, dubbed the Diablo Canyon 2045, is dedicated to protecting California’s renewable energy transition while working towards reducing energy costs for its customers. Comprised of 25 organizations, including leaders from clean energy, labor, and business sectors, this coalition is urging state lawmakers to extend the operational life of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant until 2045.

The coalition emphasizes that continuing the operation of this critical energy source will lead to significant cost savings for consumers, especially as projected energy demands are set to double by 2045. According to John Grubb, the Interim President and CEO of the Bay Area Council, maintaining the plant’s operational status will not only provide a stable source of energy but also prevent the state from regressing in its climate initiatives.

The Diablo Canyon Power Plant is California’s only functioning nuclear facility, supplying over 4 million California residents with consistent zero-emissions electricity. Recently, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted the plant a license extension, confirming its safety for continued operation for an additional two decades. However, existing state law restricts operations beyond 2030, even as the California Energy Commission anticipates a 50 percent increase in energy demand by 2045—an energy shortfall equivalent to that produced by nine Diablo Canyons.

A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) highlights the benefits of extending the plant's operation, noting that it would not only replace output from existing natural gas plants but also enable cost-effective deployment of in-state renewable resources, delaying inevitable and expensive upgrades to the transmission grid.

From an economic standpoint, the projected savings for California consumers from extending Diablo Canyon's operation could exceed $20 billion—translating to savings of more than $1.3 billion annually. This equates to an additional $5.50 on the monthly electricity bills for customers if legislative efforts fail to extend operations beyond 2030.
