Yale School of Medicine Introduces the Biomedical Imaging Institute



On June 22, 2025, Yale School of Medicine (YSM) announced the launch of the Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute (YBII), an interdisciplinary research hub designed to bring together leading experts from the fields of imaging technology, clinical translation, and data science. This initiative aims to drive innovation in biomedical imaging, enhancing understanding of human health and advancing disease treatment.

Dr. Georges El Fakhri, the inaugural director of the institute, expressed that the YBII condenses world-class talent and resources, intending to accelerate medical discoveries and their impact. El Fakhri, who also holds the title of Professor of Radiology, Biomedical Imaging, and Biomedical Informatics and Data Science, stated, “We are thrilled to see the formal establishment of the Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute and look forward to its positive influence across various disciplines in the years to come.”

Joining El Fakhri on his team are Dr. Chi Liu and Dr. Dustin Scheinost, serving as co-directors for Biomedical Imaging Technology, alongside Dr. Xenophon Papademetris, who will oversee data science, and Dr. Kelly Cosgrove, focusing on translational biomedical imaging.

The establishment of the YBII stems from a year-long strategic planning initiative led by YSM Dean Dr. Nancy J. Brown and other key figures, involving over 40 listening sessions across Yale’s science and engineering community. The enthusiastic response underscored a strong commitment to a synergetic development plan for biomedical imaging.

Objectives of the Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute


The institute's goals are ambitious and include:
  • - Creating novel biomedical imaging technologies across multiple modalities,
  • - Translating research outcomes into diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines,
  • - Utilizing artificial intelligence and data science to enhance both research and clinical care.

YBII will integrate multiple long-standing research centers and core facilities at Yale, such as the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Center and the Magnetic Resonance Research Center, blending their expertise with capabilities in data science and imaging informatics. Initial efforts will focus on providing training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows and students, along with exploratory funding opportunities.

Dr. Brian Smith, Vice Dean of Clinical and Translational Research, noted, “With a robust foundation in existing projects, Yale is poised to establish a world-class imaging institute.” The facility will support research in areas including brain imaging, oncology, cardiovascular health, and inflammation, while extending efforts in early disease detection. Data science will be integral as scientists leverage deep learning to process and share substantial imaging datasets, benefiting not only Yale researchers but also the broader scientific community.

“The establishment of this institute bolsters Yale's leadership in imaging over the past several decades and ensures that we remain at the cutting edge of translational and clinical research,” stated Dr. Douglas Rothman, who also plays a crucial role in the institute.
