Chimpanzee George Finds a New Chapter at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest

Chimpanzee George Finds His Forever Home

George, a 21-year-old chimpanzee, has recently embraced a fresh start at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest after spending a harrowing 13 years in isolation at a roadside zoo. His transformation began five months ago when he was rescued from the West Coast Game Park Safari, which had been under investigation for severe animal cruelty, leading to the indictment of its owner on multiple charges.

Since his arrival at the sanctuary on May 15, George has experienced significant changes in his quality of life. Upon entering the sanctuary, George was monitored in quarantine for a month, allowing caregivers to assess his health and establish trust. This careful introduction proved beneficial as he exhibited positive progress in a very short time.

According to Diana Goodrich, co-director of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, “Watching George discover what it means to be a chimpanzee again has been extraordinary.” She expressed joy at seeing George transition from a lonely existence to one filled with exploration and social interaction. George now enjoys climbing structures, a luxury he was deprived of for years, and he has begun to build relationships with his fellow inhabitants.

In his new 2-acre outdoor habitat, George has been observed displaying natural chimpanzee behaviors, including nest-building, a sign of his adjustment to a more natural environment. His curiosity about the other chimpanzees is palpable, especially towards the male chimpanzees, whom he engages in playful wrestling and games of chase—a far cry from his previous life where such interactions were nonexistent.

For much of his life, George had only one elderly companion. Now, he is gradually acclimating to a larger chimp community, a process that requires time and patience. Goodrich emphasized, “Learning to be part of a larger chimpanzee community takes time and patience. We’re following his lead and celebrating every milestone, no matter how small.”

George’s journey has resonated with many, especially those who had followed his plight during his years of captivity. The sanctuary has chronicled his progress through daily blogs and social media, drawing attention and support from animal welfare advocates around the globe. A recent video showcasing George exploring his outdoor habitat alongside another rescued chimpanzee, Terry, garnered heartwarming responses on social media platforms, showcasing the public's investment in his story.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, which has been operational since 2008, is the only sanctuary of its kind in the western United States. It provides lifelong care for its inhabitants, with a mission to educate the public regarding the challenges faced by primates worldwide. The sanctuary operates solely through private donations and does not receive government funding for its services, making the support of the community vital.

Goodrich expressed immense gratitude toward the sanctuary’s supporters: “We’re profoundly grateful to our supporters who built this sanctuary and make transformations like George’s possible. Every donation ensures we can provide the specialized care, companionship, and second chances that chimpanzees like George deserve.”

People wishing to stay updated on George's ongoing adventures and the stories of other rescued chimpanzees can visit ChimpsNW.org and follow the sanctuary on social media. George’s successful adaptation marks yet another inspiring chapter in the fight for animal welfare and the right for animals to live free from cruelty and neglect.

Conclusion

George's new home at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest illustrates the incredible resilience of animals caught in unfortunate circumstances. His journey is testimony to hope and healing, showcasing the importance of sanctuary environments where animals can thrive and enjoy life as nature intended.
