Exploring the Future of Cities and Housing in Japan
On September 25, 2025, the "Mansion Future Value Research Institute", under the auspices of Daiwa Life Next Co., Ltd., is set to host a free webinar titled
"What Will Happen to Cities and Housing with Population Decline?" focusing on sustainable urban development amid the current demographic changes in Japan.
Rising Urban Challenges
In recent years, a stark contrast has emerged between the booming housing market in urban areas and the plight of rural regions suffering from population decline. The average price of condominiums in metropolitan areas has surged from 40 million yen in 2015 to over 80 million yen in 2024, reflecting the increasing demand for housing in cities. Conversely, rural areas are facing a troubling rise in vacant homes, leading to severe social issues. Certain rural communities have even been labeled as having a high potential for disappearance due to this trend.
This seminar will delve into these issues, offering insights on how Japan can pursue sustainability in its cities and residential areas while curbing urban sprawl. Professor Yosuke Suhara from Kobe University will join as a guest speaker, contributing his expertise to this pressing topic.
