Visa Report Shows Continued Growth in the E-Commerce Market and Importance of Payment Experience

Visa Report Highlights E-Commerce Expansion

Visa Worldwide Japan, led by President Cheetan Kittney, recently conducted a survey to analyze the challenges and expectations in the Japanese e-commerce market. This study, executed by Macromill, incorporated insights from both businesses involved in online sales and general consumers. The findings indicate a persistent growth in the e-commerce sector, accompanied by an increasing demand for smoother, more secure payment experiences.

E-Commerce Growth Expectations among Businesses

When surveying businesses engaged in online B2C sales, an overwhelming 85% anticipated an increase in their e-commerce revenues. Among them, 33% believed that revenues would rise significantly, while 52% expected a moderate increase. This optimism seems to strengthen as the size of the company grows. Most businesses (approximately 86%) rely on credit card payments, attributing its popularity to wide user acceptance, high convenience, and strong security measures.

However, the survey reveals that nearly 79% of business operators acknowledged experiencing cart abandonment during the checkout process. This figure notably increased among larger companies, particularly those with over 500 employees, where around 90% reported such issues. A significant concern for about 29% of these businesses was the perception of payment screens as burdensome, as users often find it tedious to enter card details and personal information, potentially impacting purchase completion rates.

Moreover, 38% of respondents indicated that they must enhance their practices against cyber threats and fraud in the coming years. This underscores the necessity to elevate both consumer experience and safety in e-commerce operations.

Consumer Insights on E-Commerce

During the consumer-focused part of the study, it was revealed that 52% of participants reported an increase in their online shopping frequency and 53% noted a rise in the amount spent compared to three years ago. The preferred payment method remained credit cards, supported by reasons such as the ability to accumulate rewards (55%), fast transactions (43%), and ease of use (37%).

On the downside, many consumers faced abandonments during purchases, with 56% feeling uneasy about entering card details or authenticating. Additionally, 31% felt inconvenienced by the process, indicating that inputting card information and security checks can often be perceived as burdensome. Notably, when individuals had to repeatedly enter their card information, a strong tendency for abandonment was observed.

The Keys to E-Commerce Growth: Security and Seamless Payment Experiences

The research results suggest that while the e-commerce market is set for continued growth, businesses should focus on balancing security measures with enhancing user experiences. Consumers are looking for secure and straightforward payment processes that alleviate anxieties and reduce effort during transactions. As a response to these needs, interest is growing in innovative solutions like Click to Pay, aimed at providing a fast, easy, and secure checkout experience.

Visa is dedicated to fostering a secure and convenient payment reality by continuously improving seamless transaction experiences. The establishment of confidence and simplicity in payment methods has become essential for both businesses and consumers alike.
